Inspiring Conversations with Martha Dobbs of Play Hard Pilates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Dobbs.

Hi Martha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I was first introduced to Pilates and GYROTONIC while majoring in Dance at Wayne State University. I started my Pilates Mat certification before moving to New York City where I danced professionally and taught Pilates, GYROTONIC, and the Pilates Suspension Method for over 14 years. After our daughter was born, my husband and I wanted to be closer to family and decided it was time to return to the Midwest. We moved to Farmington (my hometown) to be close to family and since then I’ve started teaching dance again and building my Pilates and GYROTONIC clientele.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like any business, there have been ebbs and flows. Sometimes I have an amazingly full schedule of clients and other times I don’t. I think one of the things that makes me stand out as a trainer is that no matter the time in life, I am always looking to continue my education and become a better instructor for current and future clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Play Hard Pilates was born a few years ago as a way to take my private practice to the next level. Play Hard Pilates offers private Pilates and GYROTONIC training, as well as Teacher Trainings in the Pilates Suspension Method. Because I specialize in three different methods that complement each other I can find exercises that work for any type of specialty population–from high-level athletes to those rehabilitating injuries. There is a solution to make any exercise doable or more challenging. My attention to detail and experience working with countless people over my career make me stand out as a trainer who is focused on ensuring anyone who works with me has a fun, effective, and safe workout.

I am so proud that my brand truly represents me. My website lets clients know I’m fun, but the information is clear and to the point. My Instagram @playhardpilates is the journal of my life. I get real online because I’m a real person. I’m proud I’ve created a brand that feels authentic to me.

I offer an amazing Introductory Package through my website to get started with Pilates training. Pilates is a long-term investment in yourself and your health so you can do all the things you love (tennis, hiking, picking up grandchildren, etc.) for the rest of your life and I’m here to offer the guidance and expertise you need to make it part of your daily routine. My private sessions are 100% focused on the client and you’ll know that after one session.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Movement and family make me happy! I’ve been a lifelong mover and as a dancer, it was hard for me to think of Pilates as a good replacement for dance but once I really dove into the practice, I learned so many things about myself as a mover that I had never thought. Mainly that it didn’t matter what I was doing, as long as I was moving my body!

My family brings me so much joy. Moving from NYC to MI has been a huge transition and we’ve been supporting each other along the way. Everyone in my family gives the best hugs, my husband, 18-month-old, and even my dog! And their love makes any challenge I face manageable.
