Inspiring Conversations with Makayla Green of Green’s Family Cleaning Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Green.

Hi Makayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself. 
Shortly after having my daughter, I realized that I needed to work less while making more money. Don’t we all, ha. I began to research jobs that I could do without going back to school and earn a higher income than what I was already making. I loved my job at the credit union, but I needed more. I found information about being a house cleaner online and began research like crazy. I learned so much through YouTube, google, and social media about being a professional cleaner; I just went for it. When I started my company, I never thought it would become an actual business that has employees and is the sole source of income for my family. I was terrified to quit my job, but my husband convinced me that I would be a success because of who I am as a person. I decided to switch to part-time my job when I started cleaning, but within months, I had to quit that job because of the clients I was getting. Joining the chamber was a huge part of my success in the beginning of my business. I became even busier within the first few years and could no longer do it on my own. I hired my sister-in-law as my first employee, who is still with us today. My husband began being more involved and took the amazing leap of faith to quit his job of 13 years, and we went all in together. That just happened to be in March of 2020. Covid. That was the first year that we relied only on our own business to provide for our family. That year was a huge learning experience, and we did a lot of research into what it takes to grow our business, provide the best services and equipment, and manage staff. Since then, we have grown to a 10-person team and now offer carpet, air duct, upholstery, and tile cleaning on top of home and office cleaning. We have huge dreams and look forward to the continued growth of Green’s Family Cleaning Services. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There will never be a smooth road to success. You have to expect issues to come up. All you can do is your best to prepare. I learned a lot of things the hard way, and I will never forget them. Like charging 1/2 of what we should have to get “big” clients and losing money. Taking on jobs that are too far away from our service area seemed great for the price. But having to go back multiple days, because unexpected things come up actually cost me money. Haha, so we learned to stay close to home as a service provider. 

We’ve been impressed with Green’s Family Cleaning Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Green’s Family Cleaning Services is a family-owned and operated business. That is something we are very proud of! We offer professional cleaning services for commercial and residential clients in southeast Michigan. We specialize in carpet, air duct, upholstery, and tile cleaning. We also offer full home and office cleaning. We pride ourselves on being very honest and transparent with any of our services. Something that I believe sets us apart from other cleaning services is our need to give back. At Green’s Family Cleaning, we strive to give back to the very communities we serve in a multitude of ways. From offering free cleanings for cancer patients, sponsoring and coaching in our local Little League, to volunteering every holiday delivering meals. We give back as much as possible because we believe without community, we have nothing. 

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I can say that I am very lucky that I found my husband at such a young age. Without his constant motivation and believing in me (even when I did not think there was much to believe in) I would never have tried to move up in life. He definitely taught me that I am capable of amazing things and brings out the best in me. I can say with certainty that I got very lucky with him as my partner in life, love, and now business.
