Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Segar.
Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began practicing Yoga in 2015 when a friend encouraged me to take a class. I was feeling a little overwhelmed with life. Actually I was feel a lot overwhelmed with life, and she thought it might be a practice where I could find some peace. I immediately resonated with the physical aspect of the practice. I recall feeling like I was “really good” at yoga (haha, what did I know?!). But it was the more spiritual parts of the practice, like the way I was intentional with my breath, and how my breath and my body moved together, and the noticing of sensation, that really started to change something inside of me. Truly, I uncovered a sense of peace and connection that I had not felt in a long time. Once I discovered that I could train with a teacher in my own community, I took a leap of faith and a deep dive in, and began my journey as a student of yoga. I studied first for my 200 hour certificate in 2016 and then my 500 hour certificate 2018. Finally, in 2021 I enrolled in a Yoga Therapy school and completed and additional 800 hours of training to become a Certified Yoga Therapist. Currently I am the owner of Soul Deep Yoga Therapy, where I meet with clients, one-on-one, for a series of sessions. I also continue to teach group yoga classes at SLR Pilates in Niles, Michigan.
During my training, and while I was building my business, I worked as a Registered Nurse, which I still do today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While the work is so rewarding, building a small business is a challenge. Just finding ways to get the word out can be difficult in a world that has recently become saturated with wellness providers and dominated by social media algorithms . Many people don’t really understand how a Yoga Therapist can help with their health needs. Many hear the word yoga and immediately discount the therapy because they don’t think they can “do” yoga. But if you can breath, then you can do yoga. Yoga Therapy is not necessarily for those with flexible bodies, but some flexibility of the mind is helpful as we explore new ways of healing. So I guess getting the word out, and finding the best ways to explain what I do, has been a bit bumpy. Add to that responsibility to family, my continued studies as a life-log learning of yoga, and working other jobs as the business gets on its feet, and the struggles begin to add up! Luckily I know a good Yoga Therapist. 🙂
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Soul Deep Yoga Therapy, I blend science, movement, and mindfulness to help female clients reconnect with their bodies and cultivate balance from the inside out. My approach integrates functional yoga therapy with nervous system regulation, including gentle movement, breath work and mindfulness, creating customized sessions that meet each person exactly where they are — physically, emotionally, and energetically.
My clients often find me after they have experience seasons of loss, stress and disconnection. I also have clients seek me out due to acute or chronic pain. Through restorative movement, breathwork, and grounding practices, I help clients rediscover calm, strength, and safety within themselves. Alleviating not only physical pain, but mental and emotional pain as well.
What sets Soul Deep apart is its heart-centered blend of modern body science and ancient wisdom, all delivered in an environment that feels safe and deeply nourishing.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that Soul Deep Yoga Therapy has become known as a place of authentic healing and human connection. A way of using yoga as a path toward ease, clarity, and wholeness.
Through private sessions, with clearly stated goals, I invite each person to come home — to their breath, their body, and their true self.
What are your plans for the future?
The future is about deepening my roots and widening my reach in the community and beyond. I’m expanding my one-on-one yoga therapy offerings to include in person sessions at locations in Buchanan and Niles Michigan. I am also offering virtual sessions to better serve those not in my geographical community. And I’m leaning into more collaborative, community-based wellness programs — bringing the healing benefits of breath, movement, and nervous-system regulation to local libraries, hospitals, and other health initiatives.
I am currently working on a developing workshops focused on women’s wellbeing and stress recovery. Each program will blend gentle movement, mindfulness, restorative practices, and embodied education — helping people move from surviving to thriving.
I’m excited to grow Soul Deep Yoga Therapy by expanding my website to include educational content, digital resources, and guided meditations, making yoga therapy more accessible beyond the studio walls.
Big picture? I’m passionate about Yoga. It is what lights me up! I’m building a life and business rooted in authenticity, sustainability, and community care. I want people to know that I practice what I preach, and that each day I face the reality of making time to get on my mat or my meditation cushion, just like you. I look forward to continuing to serve those who are ready to slow down, reconnect, and heal — one breath, one practice, one person at a time.
