Today we’d like to introduce you to Julissa Robledo.
Hi Julissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
2025 marks 11 years since entering the beauty world professionally but it’s been an interest and part of my life for a very long time. After high school I enrolled myself in the next available starting class for an education in cosmetology. 1500 hours later followed by a practical and theory exam I became licensed by the state of Michigan. Long days and nights that were very much so worth it. Trying to find my bearings as a cosmetologist at 19 years old with a 2 year old was far from easy but I never lost sight or hope of the career and life I wanted for us. There was plenty inconsistencies on my part that kept me away from my hopes and dreams but I never gave up. Life seemed to always get in the way of wanting to pursue them full time. Self doubt, laziness, imposter syndrome and fear also played a big part in not ever taking a leap of faith or going full throttle.
5 years of inconsistency, plans not working in my favor and my negative thoughts overpowering my deepest desires was enough time for me to decide some extra help was necessary. I found SpringGR which is a program for entrepreneurs of all levels; beginners and experienced whom received a business coach to help them in their journey. My coach and cohort were truly amazing, receiving insights and opinions I needed from those who have been in the same place as me was always motivation to keep pushing. It was a major stepping stone towards not giving up and continuing to put in the work. Understanding the baby steps are all a major part of the end goal, it’s a compound effect towards the major impact. I found other entrepreneurs willing to give me 1 on 1 lessons to further educate myself in the beauty services I now provide.
Many trial and error moments have led me to where I am 11 years later. Mentors, advisors, colleagues, friends, family and most importantly my loyal clientele who continue to believe in me and support what was once upon a time just a thought in my head. It’s not an overnight process. It didn’t happen in the snap of a finger and honestly I’m still not where I want to be but along the way I’ve learned I can always set the bar higher. I’m not where I used to be either and I now understand the sky is the limit and only I stand in the way of anything I want to achieve. I’ve accomplished my first year in my own suite and although it’s been 11 years I feel like I’m just getting started. There’s so much more out there for me in the beauty world and I’m ready to receive it with God’s favor and grace over me and my business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship has been far from a smooth road with plenty of speed bumps along the way. One of my biggest struggles was the constant feeling of wanting to throw in the towel. Not feeling good enough to strive for the life I envisioned. The financial obligations for a business and motherhood can be overwhelming. Quitting or taking a break always feels like the easier thing to do. I did it multiple times until realizing that only left me disappointed and stagnant. It’s not easy to make something out of nothing but with true determination and faith the freedom behind being your own boss is truly a beautiful thing and such a blessing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Lash & Glam with Julie provides lash extensions, body waxing, thermal hair styling and color services. Enhancing all natural beauty in a judgement free manner. My suite is a calm, warm, welcoming environment. It’s a safe space for anyone who needs a helping hand in self care. I’ve been blessed with talented hands some people say is a superpower. You can guarantee a relaxing time and great laughs in my presence. We listen and we don’t judge. I love sharing my time with anyone who is vulnerable enough to share their life with me in any way. What better way to love yourself and heal your mind and heart with self care.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Advice for those starting out is to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Every day, some progress is better than none. Stick to the plan and not your mood. You can never lose betting on yourself. These are reminders that I give myself on a regular daily basis.
