Inspiring Conversations with Jonathan McGregor of ZAZ Lawn & Landscape LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan McGregor.

Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t grow up in a family of entrepreneurs. No one handed me a business plan, a client list, or startup capital. There wasn’t a safety net or a blueprint — just a decision that I was going to build something of my own.

ZAZ Lawn & Landscape LLC started the way most real businesses do — long days, tight margins, reinvesting every dollar back into better equipment and better systems. In the beginning, I was knocking on doors, earning one yard at a time, learning not just how to cut grass, but how to build trust. I quickly realized this business isn’t about mowing — it’s about reliability, communication, and delivering consistency week after week.

As I grew, I focused heavily on branding and systems. I built our website, zazlawn.com, to establish credibility and make it easy for homeowners to connect with us. I invested in professional equipment to increase efficiency and quality. I studied pricing, operations, customer psychology, and long-term scalability. I don’t see this as just a seasonal job — I see it as a real business that can be refined and improved year after year.

Being based in Michigan, especially serving Rochester Hills and surrounding communities, means something to me. These aren’t just properties — they’re neighborhoods. They’re families. Many of my clients know me personally. That accountability pushes me to raise the standard.

One thing I’m especially passionate about is mentoring others who are just getting into the industry. I know what it feels like to start with nothing but drive. If I meet someone who has that same work ethic and hunger to build, I’m always willing to share what I’ve learned — from pricing and equipment choices to avoiding early mistakes. There’s room for everyone who’s serious and disciplined enough to do it right.

Entrepreneurship has taught me resilience more than anything. There are setbacks, long winters, unexpected repairs, slow weeks — but growth comes from pushing through those seasons. I’ve built this business without family influence or generational knowledge. Just grit, learning, and constant improvement.

My goal is simple: continue growing ZAZ Lawn & Landscape into a respected local brand known for quality, professionalism, and leadership in the industry — not just through service, but through example.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

Starting a business without family influence or a built-in network means every lesson has to be learned firsthand. In the beginning, the biggest challenges were cash flow, pricing correctly, and building credibility. When you’re new, people don’t automatically trust you — you have to earn it job by job.

There were seasons where equipment broke at the worst possible time, margins were tighter than expected, and growth felt slower than I wanted. Michigan winters also bring their own challenges — landscaping is seasonal, so planning financially and operationally for the off-season takes discipline and long-term thinking.

Another major challenge was learning the business side, not just the work itself. Cutting grass is one thing. Managing expenses, branding, marketing, systems, scheduling, customer communication, and long-term scaling is something entirely different. I had to teach myself those skills through trial, research, and constant adjustment.

There were also mental challenges — self-doubt, long hours, and the pressure that comes with being fully responsible. When you’re the owner, there’s no one else to blame and no one else to fix it. That pressure can either break you or sharpen you.

For me, it sharpened me.

Every obstacle forced me to tighten up operations, improve systems, and think more strategically. I learned to treat setbacks as data, not defeat. Over time, those hard lessons built resilience and clarity.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change those struggles. They built the foundation for the business I’m continuing to grow today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about ZAZ Lawn & Landscape LLC?
ZAZ Lawn & Landscape LLC is a Michigan-based lawn and property maintenance company focused on professionalism, consistency, and detail.

We specialize in residential lawn maintenance, clean edging, defined lines, seasonal property cleanups, and maintaining properties to a high visual standard week after week. What we are known for is reliability. We show up when scheduled, communicate clearly, and leave a property noticeably sharper than when we arrived.

What sets us apart is not just the cut, but the approach. I treat this like a real business, not a side hustle. That means investing in professional-grade equipment, building systems that create consistency, and continuously improving operations. We built a strong digital presence through zazlawn.com to make it easy for homeowners to learn about us, connect with us, and trust the brand before we ever step on their property.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the reputation we have built. We are not trying to be the biggest. We are focused on being dependable and respected. In an industry where many operate casually, we operate intentionally.

Leadership within the industry also matters to me. I actively mentor others who are just getting started, especially those with the same drive and discipline. I believe there is room for anyone willing to work hard and run their business professionally. When we raise the standard collectively, it benefits the entire community.

At its core, ZAZ Lawn & Landscape is not just about mowing grass. It is about pride in craftsmanship, commitment to community, and honoring your work, whatever that work may be. Whether someone is cutting grass, building homes, cleaning bathrooms, or flipping burgers, I believe there is dignity in mastering your craft and doing it beautifully.

We live in a place many would call paradise, yet it is easy to overlook that in the middle of daily stress. My goal is simple. When a homeowner pulls into their driveway, they see a yard that gives them a sense of peace, even if just for a moment. We provide a quality service we are proud of so they can be proud of their home.

We are still growing, still refining, and still raising the bar.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I have always believed that growth is intentional. For me, learning is not something I do occasionally, it is part of how I operate.

I have been a computer programmer for 22 years, starting at a young age. Learning to code early shaped the way my brain works. It trained me to think logically, solve problems systematically, and constantly refine systems. That mindset carries over into everything I do, including how I run my business. I currently build and sell multiple SaaS products, so software and structured thinking are deeply ingrained in how I approach work and life.

A few books that have had a major impact on me include Twelve Pillars by Jim Rohn, The Lessons of History, Never Finished, The One Minute Manager, How to Win and Influence People, Think and Grow Rich, The Brain That Changes Itself, and The Law and the Promise. Each one influenced a different part of me, whether it was discipline, leadership, psychology, faith, or long-term thinking.

Jim Rohn is by far my favorite motivational speaker. His principles around personal responsibility, self-education, and building a strong foundation resonated with me early on. I return to his talks often because they reinforce simple truths that never go out of style.

At the end of the day, I believe growth in business always starts with growth in the individual. Whether it is coding software, maintaining a lawn, or mentoring someone new in the industry, I approach it the same way. Learn, refine, improve, repeat.
