Inspiring Conversations with Jon Croy of Serenity Outdoors, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Croy.

Hi Jon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At the start of Serenity Outdoors in 2017, I was also working a full time job in banking. I’ve always loved working outdoors, so when we started it was just me and a couple buddies working on the weekends and evenings. Since then we have grown to have 5 full time employees, and we plan to start a 2nd crew in 2026. We are so blessed to be where we are, and take pride in our work and our employees. It’s very rewarding to work in the community in which we live, improving outdoor living spaces for families to enjoy together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growth from the ground up has not been easy, but we’ve proven our dedication to quality and caring for those around us for many years. The biggest hurdle was the switch from part time to full time, which happened the week before the COVID shut down. There was a lot of unknown at the time, but we persevered and have come out stronger in the end.

As you know, we’re big fans of Serenity Outdoors, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a landscaping company that serves Kalamazoo and surrounding areas, specializing in hardscapes such as patios, retaining walls, walkways, outdoor kitchens, essentially anything involving brick. We make sure it’s done right the first time and have been certified as professional paver installers through the Concrete Masonry and Hardscape Association.

Through we pride ourselves on the quality of our work, we also take pride in caring for our community and our employees. As a company we will volunteer in the community and have a close collaboration with Gryphon place, a local suicide prevention organization. Our employees are highly valued, and we invest in them to develop their skills and promote their career growth. As a small company we have close relationships with each other, so it can feel like a (slightly dysfunctional) family. 🙂

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I am currently mentoring a young start up landscaping company, being what I wish I had when I started out. For those starting on their journey, try to find someone that can talk through things with you, can be your guide and also encourage you to be the best you, personally and professionally. Take care of yourself and your family and pour that same compassion and care into your company. In my belief that is the road to success.
