Inspiring Conversations with John Love of Luna Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Love.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For at least a decade I had dreams and visions of creating a Spiritual Center. I deemed it impossible for many years as I was the father of a young child and because I was living in Hawaii where I couldn’t afford to do anything like that. Once my son got to be a Junior in high school, I started actively looking for places to make my dream come true. I focused at first on New Mexico because the land is cheap there. After several visits to look at properties, I realized it wasn’t the place for me. My son and I then moved to Boulder, Colorado, and I began searching for properties near there. When I finally found one–in the mountains–I decided I needed something to compare it to before I made an offer. Since I grew up in Michigan and had an understanding of the land and prices there, I did a quick search to see what I could get for the same amount of money I was about to spend. My jaw hit the floor when the search results came back. It was in Michigan that I could actually afford to carry out the vision in my head.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Once I realized Michigan was where I would bring my dream to life, I had to come to terms with returning to the place of the first 24 years of my life. All my family still lived there, and of course my old friends from high school and college. As far as finding and purchasing the property for my Spiritual Center, everything just fell into place like it was meant to be. I had to do substantial renovations that I naively thought could be accomplished in four months. They took closer to two years.

As you know, we’re big fans of Luna Center. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Today Luna Center is thriving. Situated on a pristine 13 acres of meadows, forest, and wetlands, Luna has an abundance of nature and wildlife. We host Ecstatic Dances, yoga classes, Spiritual study groups, a men’s group, and lots of workshops and retreats. Luna’s focus is being refined toward the Way of Mastery teachings (which is kinda like A Course in Miracles 2.0) and also hosting more daylong and weekend retreats.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Moving back to mid-Michigan after being away for nearly 30 years was a challenge, but ultimately it feels like a homecoming. Most of those reasons why I left were resolved, and the few that weren’t I’ve either worked through or am in the process of. By returning to the place I grew up, it feels like the circle has been completed. I have learned to love the Lansing area and have discovered so many amazing places that I either never knew existed before or else never took advantage of. The Lansing area is home to an abundance of parks and hiking trails, so it’s easy to get your fill of nature. I love to walk around the capitol building, and Lansing is also home to many of my favorite restaurants, from Thai to American, and Indian to Ethiopian. The duration of winter remains the challenging aspect. I love winter until about mid-January, but winter has still got a minimum of six weeks to go.
