Inspiring Conversations with Jamie Phillips of Open Hearts Counseling LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Phillips.

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A humble dream of having my own private practice someday.. The dream was inspired when my father had to have open heart surgery.. I kept dreaming about creating a place of my own. I named the practice in honor of my dad’s surgery which was extremely successful and he made it through. I have lived in Pontiac Michigan all my life. I was the last graduating class of Pontiac Central High School. I’ve been in the mental health field for over ten years. I have always had a strong desire to help others in need. A humble dream has gradually grown from just a mere six months of being open to serve the local community. Here at Open Hearts no one is ever left behind. I have a very strong belief that Open Hearts will be a place to heal the broken and also be a safe haven for others who’ve felt invisible for a long time. I like to think this was my calling to help others since a high school instructor, Mr. Spencer inspired me to go for psychology. My heart is never full and I’m always looking for innovative ways to inspire others for greatness.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say my biggest challenge was believing in myself. I used to work for an agency that at the end made me often feel used and exploited. I felt that most of my thoughts were never appreciated or heard. I also sometimes struggle with delegating help from others. I think I’ve grown in such a short time of being a business owner and believing that greatness takes time. It starts from extending grace to yourself that you can be more than just a counselor. You can be the person who steps on faith that everything will work out in the end. I remind myself that 2025 was the year I finally chose myself for once.

We’ve been impressed with Open Hearts Counseling LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A small private practice in mental health counseling that is located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. We offer counseling for individuals, couples, and families. We accept Medicaid clients with no wait lists. We are also accepting counseling interns for the winter and spring semester where they get an opportunity to help others. We are a small private practice that always has an open Hearts for serving the community.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy? I have a strong desire to help animals in need. I’ve fostered and re-homed several cats in the past. I also spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I enjoy reading inspirational literature, writing poetry, and interior decorating.
