Inspiring Conversations with Dolores Garcia of D’Lola Skin & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dolores Garcia.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into skincare comes from a very personal place. Growing up, I dealt with really bad skin issues, like painful cystic acne and deep scars. The usual treatments I tried never seemed to fix the root of the problem, and no one took the time to teach me how to care for my skin from the inside out.

I have been a hospital nurse for ten years, working on busy medical floors. Even though I loved taking care of my patients, my own struggle with skin always stayed in the back of my mind. I wanted to create a safe, welcoming place where medical science and natural wellness could meet. So, I went back to school to get certified in aesthetic nursing and opened D’Lola Skin and Wellness in Allen Park. I wanted to build a business that doesn’t just push products or try to sell you a service. Instead, we focus entirely on the fact that holistic treatments and proper education actually work. My clients and their glowing results are living proof of that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth or easy road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. In the beginning, the biggest struggle was time. When I was trying to get D’Lola Skin and Wellness off the ground, I was still working full-time as a registered nurse at the hospital. Balancing long, exhausting 12-hour shifts caring for very sick patients while trying to learn how to open a business took a lot of late nights and hard work.

Also, as a first-generation Mexican-American, I didn’t have a family roadmap or a guide on how to start a business. But that exact challenge is what keeps me motivated today. In our community, it is very common for people to get hurt by unlicensed, dangerous beauty treatments—what people call ‘basement botox’—simply because they don’t have access to the right information or because of language barriers. Overcoming my own hurdles to build this business gave me a voice to help protect, teach, and uplift my community.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
D’Lola Skin and Wellness is a nurse-led medical spa focused on clean beauty and safe, healthy results. We are located right inside The Modern Lounge in Allen Park, Michigan. The top three treatments our clients love us for are custom facials, Botox, and advanced Korean skincare procedures. We have special training in premium Korean medical-grade products, and everything we do is based on keeping your skin safe and healthy. What completely sets us apart is that we care about educating you, not just selling you something.

Our business is grown entirely by word of mouth. When people see how well our holistic treatments and educational approach work, they tell their family and friends.I never rush my clients. When you sit in my chair, we look at the big picture. A lot of times, skin problems are actually caused by other health issues or everyday stress. Because of my nursing background and the constant training classes I take, I know how to treat all different skin tones and types safely. We also speak both English and Spanish fluently so there are never any communication barriers. Most importantly, your safety comes first. If your skin needs a treatment that goes beyond my training, I will gladly connect you with a trusted doctor or specialist. I just want my clients to know that this is a safe, cozy space where they can relax and heal.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see the beauty and medspa industry moving toward a much more natural, whole-body approach. People are starting to realize that quick fixes don’t last. They want treatments that blend safe Western medicine with natural, clean care to keep their skin looking young and healthy for a long time. What makes my business unique in this changing industry is that I bring both medical knowledge and a real understanding of different cultures. To make sure I can give my clients the absolute best care possible, I am currently going back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner. This new degree will help me offer even better medical and natural skincare options at D’Lola, keeping our community safe, educated, and glowing!
