Inspiring Conversations with Bridgett Blough of Of the Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridgett Blough.

Hi Bridgett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My husband (Trent) and I met at the farmers’ market in Kalamazoo. I owned a food truck called The Organic Gypsy and he had a farm called Green Gardens Community Farm. For almost a decade, we worked together professionally, him supplying me organic fruit and veggies, while I provided catering for his clients at the venue. We had a few very fun pop up dinners in the Greenhouse Venue celebrating the Summer Solstice and hosted musician May Erlewine. Additionally, during Covid I supplied many prepared foods in his Green Box that was distributed throughout our local counties as a way to feed people when there weren’t food truck events or weddings.
After his intense pursuit, our romantic story started in 2020 and since we’ve been together we rebranded the catering, farm, and venue as Of The Land, added a commercial kitchen on the farm, as well as 3 beautiful landscaped gardens. Together, Trent and I have remodeled the Farm Flat Airbnb, concrete sidewalks, and three renovations to the Greenhouse Venue. As husband and wife who fell in love and had our own wedding on the farm, we have spread our good vibes all over the farm.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is a massive undertaking to take on what Trent and I have in the last 5 years and on a daily basis. It is not easy to build up your business and we did experience financial struggles with the incredible infrastructure we’ve put in on the farm in 5 short years. For us as parents, a daily struggle is balancing the needs of our 3 children and our businesses. It is the greatest struggle for us– how to serve our clients, show up for our kids as the parents they deserve, and attempt to spend time on ourselves and our relationship.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What I love about the farm is the feeling you get when you are in our outdoor spaces. I have not been to any other venues or spots in Michigan that have the incredible diversity of flowers and plants. Additionally, we’ve seriously created our own “vibe” with the choices we’ve made with the type of furniture, our color palettes, and design scheme. I joke sometimes with clients that I want our slogan to be “A Farm, But Not a Barn.” I realized that almost every single outdoor venue was a barn except us. The spaces that we’ve created both in the Greenhouse Venue and our four incredible landscaped gardens is totally different than a tent on a lawn, sitting in an old barn, or looking out at a manicured golf course. We have stayed true to ourselves and we’re brave enough to be different. When our clients are at the property, they not only see the differences, but they feel them.
