Inspiring Conversations with Ayana Hall of Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayana Hall.

Ayana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began more than 20 years ago in the beauty and fashion industry, but entrepreneurship became much bigger than simply building a business for me. It became a journey of creativity, resilience, reinvention, and learning how to turn my experiences into something that could serve others.

I’ve always had a natural interest in beauty, fashion, branding, and creating experiences that make people feel confident. Over the years, that passion grew into entrepreneurship and eventually led me to build Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa in Detroit. What started with beauty services evolved into a much larger vision centered around beauty, wellness, self-care, and creating elevated experiences for women.

Building that vision required me to learn far beyond the technical side of beauty. I became deeply involved in marketing, sales, operations, customer experience, vendor management, business development, and brand strategy. I also continued investing in my education, including earning an associate degree in Marketing and Management and later completing cosmetology school. Every stage of my career has added another layer to how I understand business and the people I serve.

One of the most defining chapters of my journey came in 2023 when I experienced stage 4 liver failure. My life changed very quickly, and recovery required me to look at wellness from an entirely different perspective. I had to reconnect with myself, understand who I was becoming, and become much more intentional about the life and future I wanted to create.

That experience also changed the way I viewed my work. Beauty was no longer just about appearance to me. I began thinking more deeply about wellness, energy, longevity, confidence, and the importance of caring for ourselves before we reach a point of depletion.

Even while navigating those personal challenges, I continued working toward my vision. In 2025, I opened the doors to a nearly 3,000-square-foot Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa in Detroit after years of planning, funding, development, setbacks, and persistence. Along the way, I was fortunate to receive support through programs such as Motor City Match, Black Leaders Detroit, Kiva, and ProsperUs. Also, being recognized with a Spirit of Detroit Award was especially meaningful because Detroit has played such an important role in both my personal and entrepreneurial story.

But opening the doors wasn’t the end of the journey. It actually became the beginning of another transformation.

Today, I’m taking everything I’ve learned from more than two decades in beauty, wellness, entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, and customer experience and using it to build the next chapter of my career and brand with greater intention. My focus has expanded beyond simply providing services. I’m interested in creating sustainable beauty and wellness experiences, developing brands, building meaningful client relationships, and helping women make self-care part of how they maintain their confidence, energy, and quality of life.

My path hasn’t been linear, and I’m grateful for that. Some of my greatest lessons came from moments when I had to rebuild, pivot, or reconsider what success looked like. I’ve learned that sometimes growth means expanding, and sometimes it means having the courage to restructure your life around the person you’ve become.

I’m still evolving, but today I have a much clearer understanding of what I want my work to represent: beauty with purpose, wellness with intention, and experiences that leave people better than I found them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There have been moments when I’ve felt incredibly proud of what I was building, and other moments when I questioned whether I had the capacity to keep going.

One of the biggest challenges has been the financial reality of entrepreneurship. Building a business, especially a brick-and-mortar business, requires much more than having a great idea or being talented at what you do. There are buildout costs, inventory, equipment, staffing, marketing, operating expenses, and unexpected challenges that don’t always happen according to your business plan. I invested heavily into bringing my vision for Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa to life, and there were times when the financial responsibility of keeping that vision moving forward became overwhelming.

The pandemic also changed the trajectory of my business. Like many professionals in the beauty industry, I had to navigate shutdowns, restrictions, changes in consumer behavior, and uncertainty about what business would look like moving forward. I had to adapt, work differently, and continue building even when the path ahead wasn’t clear.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that perseverance doesn’t always mean holding onto something exactly as you originally envisioned it. Sometimes perseverance means knowing when to pivot. I spent years working toward opening my Detroit location, and when I finally opened the doors in 2025, it represented so much more than a business milestone. It represented everything I had survived and sacrificed to get there. That made it difficult to accept when I later realized that my next chapter might require a different structure.

I’ve had to separate my identity from a building, a title, and even my original definition of success. I’ve learned that changing direction doesn’t erase what you accomplished. Everything I built taught me something about leadership, business, people, money, resilience, and myself.

The road has included sacrifice, financial pressure, health challenges, uncertainty, rebuilding, and some very uncomfortable decisions. But it has also given me perspective. Today, I’m much more intentional about building a life and career that are not only successful from the outside, but sustainable and fulfilling for me as a person.

I still believe in dreaming big. I just understand now that the dream is allowed to evolve as you do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa ?
Vivacious Lady Luxury Spa is a beauty and wellness brand built around the idea that taking care of yourself should be more than an occasional luxury. It should be an intentional part of how you maintain your confidence, energy, and overall well-being.

Over the years, the brand has evolved tremendously. What began with my passion for beauty, hair, fashion, and personal care grew into a much broader vision for creating elevated beauty and wellness experiences. Our work has included hair care, skincare, waxing, beauty maintenance, and wellness-focused services, but what I believe truly defines Vivacious Lady is the experience and intention behind the service.

I specialize in working with women who carry a lot of responsibility in their everyday lives. They may be executives, entrepreneurs, professionals, mothers, creatives, or simply women who are intentional about how they show up in the world. For that reason, I’ve become increasingly focused on routine beauty and wellness maintenance rather than encouraging women to wait for a special occasion to prioritize themselves. The goal is to help clients stay ready, refreshed, confident, and cared for throughout the year.

What sets the brand apart is my approach to beauty as part of a larger wellness lifestyle. My own experiences have taught me that looking good and feeling well are connected, but wellness goes much deeper than appearance. Rest, stress management, preventative care, healthy routines, and understanding your body all contribute to longevity and quality of life. As the brand continues to evolve, education around wellness and longevity is becoming an important part of the bigger mission.

Another thing that sets Vivacious Lady apart is the attention to the entire client experience. My background in marketing, management, beauty, sales, and business development has shaped the way I think about every touchpoint, from the way a client discovers the brand to how she is welcomed, cared for, educated, and encouraged to maintain her results afterward. I want luxury to feel personal, consistent, thoughtful, and never transactional.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Vivacious Lady has been able to evolve without losing its identity. The business has existed through different seasons of my life, changes within the beauty industry, the pandemic, my health journey, opening a brick-and-mortar location, and now another period of growth and restructuring. Each chapter has helped me become clearer about what the brand is ultimately here to accomplish.

The future of Vivacious Lady is bigger than a single location or service menu. I see it growing at the intersection of beauty, wellness, education, hospitality, and lifestyle. I’m especially passionate about creating experiences that make high-quality beauty and wellness care more intentional and accessible, while also educating our communities about wellness practices that can support healthier, longer lives.

What I want readers to know most is that Vivacious Lady has never simply been about helping women look beautiful. It is about how women feel when they have taken the time to care for themselves. Beauty may be where the relationship begins, but confidence, wellness, consistency, and quality of life are where I want the impact to continue.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say adaptability has been one of the most important qualities to my success. I’ve learned how to adjust without losing sight of who I am or what I’m ultimately trying to build.

Entrepreneurship rarely happens exactly the way you plan it. I’ve had to navigate changes in the economy, the pandemic, financial challenges, major health challenges, relocation, and different seasons of my business and personal life. There have been times when the original plan simply no longer fit the circumstances or the person I had become.

Earlier in my journey, I thought resilience meant pushing through no matter what. Today, I understand it differently. Sometimes resilience is persistence, but sometimes it’s having the wisdom to pivot, restructure, ask for help, learn something new, or even release something you worked incredibly hard to build.

I’m also naturally resourceful. If I don’t know how to do something, I’m willing to learn. If one approach isn’t working, I look for another. I’ve had to wear many hats throughout my career, and every challenge has expanded my ability to think creatively, solve problems, and see opportunities from different perspectives.

Most importantly, I’ve learned not to become so attached to one version of success that I miss what could be next. My goals have evolved as I’ve evolved, and I think my willingness to keep growing has allowed me to continue moving forward through circumstances that could have easily made me stop.

For me, success isn’t about having a perfectly smooth journey. It’s about being able to evolve through each season while continuing to move with purpose.
