Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Smith.
Hi Angie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My path to real estate has been like some of my favorite hiking trails in the state: winding and unexpected, with some commonalities that I cherish.
Before becoming a REALTOR®, I spent many years in education and as a nonprofit volunteer. I’m a Michigan grad who went on to earn a master’s degree and start a family while working with learners of varied ages and backgrounds, including people with traumatic brain injuries. I found that work deeply meaningful because I could help people navigate challenges and make progress toward their goals. But as education moved online during the pandemic, I realized I wanted to make a change, and that led me to explore what might come next. I even ran for the Ann Arbor school board because I was interested in finding ways to better contribute to my community.
Around that same time, I approached a friend about real estate. I was initially interested in finding a property for our family, but I could also see the potential for me to help people through important transitions in their lives. Real estate is about far more than houses. It’s about noticing, being curious, having a plan, and navigating transitions—kind of like a great hike. I earned my license in 2021 and began working with an established team, where I had the opportunity to learn the business and build my own relationships.
I set a goal to learn and earn enough to buy a waterfront property for our family someday. I accomplished that goal sooner than I expected, but the bigger surprise was discovering how much I loved the work itself. Over the years, my business has continued to evolve, giving me the opportunity to shape my work around what matters most to me. Trusted relationships are at the center of my work, and helping people find, buy, and sell homes in Michigan is truly gratifying.
Michigan has always been the setting for my story. My roots here, my family, the communities where I’ve lived and helped to grow, and the places that have become meaningful to us have shaped the way I think about home. One of the things I love about real estate is getting to know the stories behind different neighborhoods and helping people find a place that fits not just their needs today, but the life they’re building.
I also carry the perspective I developed through education and community involvement: where we live matters. Homes and neighborhoods influence our connections, opportunities, sense of belonging, and the future of our communities.
So, while my path has been interesting, as I look around, I see that some things never change. I’m still trying to help people move forward, navigate change, and make good decisions about what comes next. Real estate just gave me a different way to do it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve had to slow down and figure out my footing along the way!
One of the most unexpected twists has been dealing with repeated skin cancer and the possibility that treatment could significantly change my face. It was a reminder that life doesn’t always wait for a convenient time to hand you something difficult. I had to make space for my health while continuing to care for my family and my clients. I am grateful to my past client for urging me to have a spot checked.
Balancing family with a demanding career has also been an ongoing challenge. Real estate can easily fill every available hour, especially when you care deeply about the people you’re serving. As my business has grown, I’ve had to become intentional about how I spend my time and attention.
Going out on my own has brought another kind of learning curve. Being an entrepreneur means there is a whole back side of the job—understanding the economics of the business, managing operations, building systems, scheduling, and figuring out how to grow in a way that is sustainable. I’ve had to learn not only how to serve my clients well, but also how to build a business that can support that level of service.
I also continually learn aout the market itself. Understanding how interest rates, inventory, affordability, local economic conditions, and buyer and seller behavior affect the market is essential to helping clients make good decisions. There is always something new to understand, and some unexpected turns.
None of these challenges have made me question whether I chose the right path. If anything, they’ve made me more thoughtful about how I work. I’m still learning how to balance the different parts of my life and business, and I’m sure there will be more steep sections ahead. That’s probably part of what keeps the work interesting.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My mission is to guide clients with knowledge and personalized support, making the real estate process smooth and straightforward.
I help buyers and sellers navigate residential real estate in Michigan, with a focus on feeling informed and confident throughout the process, whether they are buying their first home, selling a longtime family home, moving within Michigan, or making a larger investment.
As an independent Realtor, I’ve been intentional about building a business that reflects how I want to work. I’m not trying to be the agent who does the most transactions. I want to be the agent people trust to listen carefully, understand their goals, pay attention to the details, and give them honest advice—even when the answer isn’t the easiest one.
My background in education also shapes how I work. I enjoy learning, explaining, problem-solving, and helping people make sense of complicated information. Real estate has plenty of all of that. I want my clients to have an agent who understands both the transaction and the life that happens around it.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m always eager to talk about lifelong learning, both professionally and personally. Setting goals and figuring out how and why I want to keep working hard has been an ongoing practice for me. At one point, I realized I needed less of a new goal and more of a mindset shift.
A few books that have helped me with that are The Miracle Morning, You Are a Badass, and Never Split the Difference. Each has influenced how I think about habits, confidence, communication, and getting uncomfortable enough to keep growing.
I’m especially interested right now in learning methods of clean, clear communication—how to be direct and honest while still being thoughtful and respectful. I want to hear what books, podcasts, or other resources have helped other people with that.
Someone I would love to meet is Brené Brown. I appreciate her work around courage, vulnerability, leadership, and the importance of having meaningful conversations. Those ideas connect with how I try to approach my work and my life: work hard, keep learning, take care of the people who matter, and stay connected to what is actually important.
