Inspiring Conversations with Amy Taylor of Bert’s Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Taylor.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started at Bert’s Bakery Comstock at the age of 15. At 22 the bakery became for sale and my parents helped me to purchase the business as my mom has a craft store and needed a store front. Eventually she added on a larger kitchen for me and she had more room in the front for her gift store. At that point I was a single mother trying to raise children and build a business. Our original location is in a small town so it was hard financially to make it. I started buying equipment with the hopes that someday I would open in a better location. I remarried at the age of 41 and along with my wonderful Husband an opportunity opened up for us to add a second location on a very busy road. So we spent a few months working on a build out with the owner along with our own blood sweat and tears. We started with just a front with no kitchen and did most of our production in our other location and hauled product every day. After a year we know we needed to put a kitchen in. So that was our plan within the second year.. We moved production over to the larger facility. It took off. At the age of 55 I have been at Bert’s Bakery for #40 years and have owned the bakery for #32 years. I have personally made more that 8000 Wedding Cakes in my career and can’t count the Birthday cakes. I also am the Promotor for the SouthWest Michigan Bridal Show for the past 13 years. We currently have 4 generations working in the Bakery. From mu 79 year old mother to my 12 year old Grand Daughter. My Daughter Holly will more than likely take the bakery order in the next 6-8 years along with her daughters beside her.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There was a lot of financial struggles. I didn’t really know my worth until I got older and realized that no one else was working overtime without the pay. I did allot of 24 hours working to get the orders done.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are known for our Cakes, Wedding Cakes and Pastries.

How do you think about happiness?
My Husband is my Best Friend and he supports me in every thing I’ve done. He has his full time job but I can rely on him for any help keeping the business equipment maintained and he even has helped me bake cakes on a Sunday when we have 10-15 wedding cakes a week.
