Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Schaefer.
Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I could remember, I was obsessed with makeup. I remember being 13 years old, getting my first makeup kit and practicing for hours. Not much has changed, as I’m about to turn 40. Most of my adult life, I had jobs that weren’t for me. From waitressing to bartending, retail, home healthcare, and working in an office at a gravel pit. I just knew I had to do something more creative and meaningful.
One day, my best friend and I were talking about it, and she suggested I go into makeup. At this time, my son was a few years away from graduating high school, and I knew it was time for me to do something for myself. I have this amazing hairstylist who owns her own salon called Stylistic, and she gave me some advice: to go to school to be an esthetician so I could do makeup for weddings… and she would hire me at her salon. So there I was, about to turn 37 and going back to school.
I was the oldest one there, but we had so much fun, I honestly miss it sometimes. While I was in school, my eyes were opened to all the amazing things I could do besides makeup. I became obsessed again, like that 13-year-old little girl.
When I graduated and passed my state boards, I went to my friend, the hairstylist/owner, ready for her to hire me. Instead, she suggested that I rent a space from her and try going solo because she really believed I could do it. She helped me with advertising on her business Facebook page, told her customers about me, and was there for me along the way whenever I needed anything. I honestly wouldn’t have had the courage to go through with this without her, and I’m forever grateful for her.
I’m also so grateful for the clients I have, I’m truly blessed. Being able to finally go to work and love what I do, and love who I’m around, is an indescribable feeling.
Now I’m going into year two of running Your Beauty Call, and I finally feel like I’m doing what I was meant to do. Maybe this will help give courage to that mom out there to make a change and pursue her dreams… no matter her age.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every road has a few bumps, right? It was definitely scary going back to school, being the oldest one there made me wonder, am I too old? Would I be able to do this while still taking care of my home and my son? But I did it!
Then came starting my own business and learning to keep up with trends, marketing, content creation, getting clients, and building a brand that truly stands out. Even today, I’m still learning and trying new things every day.
There were times in the beginning when I didn’t have a single client some weeks, and that was discouraging. But I kept going and refused to give up. When I do get a client, I make it all about them, giving them an experience where they can relax, laugh, and feel pampered.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is all about the client. Everything I do is personalized to them. I specialize in facials, HydroFacials, lash extensions, lash lifts and tints, brow tint and lamination, and waxing.
What sets Your Beauty Call apart is the genuine experience I create for every person who sits in my chair. I want my clients to feel comfortable, cared for, and confident. I think my clients appreciate not only my pricing but also the positive, relaxing energy in my space and how they feel after each visit.
There’s nothing better than seeing someone’s face light up when they look in the mirror and see their results. That moment makes everything worth it.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think you definitely need to know how to talk to your client and make them feel comfortable, maybe a good sense of humor and humanity.
Sometimes my client needs to vent about her day, or tell me something funny that happened to her. I feel like that’s part of my job too. I’ve had clients tell me how much they appreciate me just listening to them after their session.
