Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Dominguez.
Alexander, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I opened Loyalty Barbershop in January of 2022. I started cutting hair in 2016. becoming a barber was not something that interested me before, I knew I liked working with my hands, and always liked getting my haircut, but barbering was not on my radar out of high school. After spending some time at community college I realized, that college was not the route for me. I had saw this video of these barbers in Europe cutting hair and thought “that looks like fun”. so I looked into it, and I enrolled to the Lansing School of Barbering. while I was in school my father passed away, he had always told me growing up that “the quality of work you do, will define who you are” after losing one of my biggest supporters, i focused on cutting hair, and tryin to provide the best quality I can do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
being a barber and being a shop owner are two very different things, I feel like I’m a pretty good barber, but I’m still learning how to be a business owner. You need to be an expert in everything and you’re not. I’ve had so much help since starting Loyalty, from other business owners, my shop manager Cody, family, everyone helping along the way. now that we are in year three, I’m starting to be able to run things a lot more smoothly.
As you know, we’re big fans of Loyalty Barbershop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
we are a traditional barbershop in Old Town Lansing, we offer three services. Haircut, Beard Trim, and Straight Razor Shave. we make sure that everyone is welcomed at the shop, and anyone looking for a barber style haircut (shorter haircut) can come in and leave looking and feeling their best.
we do both appointments and walk-ins, open 7 days a week. Appointments are Monday through Friday from 10am to 7pm and Walk-ins are Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm
at Loyalty we most proud of our inclusive environment, having clients feel welcomed and safe at the barbershop has been a great feeling and helps our community grow.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience, to be able to keep going in the face of setbacks, criticism, failure, or slow progress. you can be the most talented barber in your area, but without resilience, those qualities can be underused or abandoned when things get hard.
