Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Gatlin.
Hi Aisha , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Aisha Gatlin is a licensed cosmetologist, educator and visionary entrepreneur reshaping the future of beauty education. As the Founder and Director of Education at Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology, she leads with intention and influence, creating opportunities that have long been missing for aspiring beauty professionals.
Before establishing BLSC, Aisha built her salon into a leading destination for luxury textured hair care, earning recognition for elevating standards in an industry that has historically underrepresented textured hair training. Her drive to expand access and representation led her to make history in 2019 by launching Ann Arbor’s first Black-owned cosmetology school, a milestone celebrated both locally and nationally for its impact on equity and visibility.
At Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology, Aisha’s approach extends far beyond technique. She developed a curriculum that reflects the realities of a diverse beauty landscape, centered on textured hair education, modern aesthetics and real-world business readiness. Through mentorship and a learning environment rooted in confidence and community, she equips students to thrive as artists, entrepreneurs and leaders.
Aisha’s mission is rooted in empowerment, ownership and legacy. Her work ensures students step into their careers with a strong sense of identity, creative direction and long-term opportunity. With every graduate, she continues to shift the narrative and reaffirm that when beauty education is inclusive and intentional, it transforms futures and strengthens communities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped who I am as a founder and what Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology represents. As a Black woman building a cosmetology school, I faced barriers with funding, credibility, and navigating systems not designed for entrepreneurs like me. Launching the first Black-owned cosmetology school in Ann Arbor meant carving a path where none existed—developing curriculum, earning trust, and proving the value of textured hair education. The accreditation process added another layer of complexity, but it strengthened our foundation and raised our standards. Despite the obstacles, I’m grateful for the resilience this journey has built. Every step has reinforced why this work matters and why representation in beauty education is essential.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology?
Beautiful Luxe School of Cosmetology grew from the vision I first realized in my salon, a space celebrating natural textured hair while empowering clients through expert care and creativity. That foundation inspired a school where aspiring beauty professionals can train in cosmetology, cosmetology instructor programs, and nail technology.
Fully accredited and accepting public and government-based funding, we make high-quality education accessible to all. Our pay-as-you-go financing ensures finances never stand in the way of pursuing a dream career.
What sets us apart is that students leave with more than the hours required for licensure, they leave as established brands, equipped with skills, confidence, and a professional identity. I’m proud of the community we’ve built, a space where creativity, representation, and opportunity thrive, preparing graduates to elevate both themselves and the beauty industry.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is being able to lead and uplift others, especially those who may not have access to guidance or support. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student or mentee realize their potential, gain confidence, and build a career for themselves. Knowing I can create a space where people feel seen, heard, and empowered reminds me why I do this work. Happiness for me comes from impact, helping others succeed, breaking barriers, and serving as a beacon of possibility for those who may not have had one before.
