Inspiring Conversations with Adria Moses of The School of Radical Healing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adria Moses. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Adria Moses is a Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Facilitator, Speaker, Coach, and Founder of the School of Radical Healing (SORH).

At the young age of 12, Adria was diagnosed with the chronic illness Crohn’s disease, an autoimmune & inflammatory disease that was a constant source of suffering through her teens and early twenties. In 2013, Adria’s sickness had progressed to a life-threatening condition and she underwent emergency surgery, was put on life support, and hospitalized for 60 days.

As she awoke to the sound of her breath echoing through an oxygen tube, so too did she awaken to a newfound gratitude for the breath, as well as a commitment to face her illness from a different perspective, but the trials weren’t over yet. As a result of the medical trauma she experienced, Adria developed clinical PTSD, anxiety, and depression and in 2014 she attempted to take her own life… and survived.

Overcome with grief and severe somatic disruption, Adria became determined to heal, but how does one recover from such deep trauma? Intuitively, she knew her mind was no longer connected with her body and she had to start there. She had to get back into her body if she was ever going to own her life again.

Intuitively, Adria was led to yoga. Unfamiliar with the practice and completely inflexible, she had found a medicine, a remedy to her suffering. Through yoga, Adria could see, feel, hear herself again. The practice stimulated her mind, body, and spirit and she was immediately inspired to begin sharing the practice with any and everyone she knew. In 2016 she pursued her 200-hour Yoga Certification through Yoga Shelter.

In 2017, Adria launched The Art of Yoga, a debut event foreshadowing her many successes to come. Hosted downtown at the esteemed Detroit is the New Black, the night-fused yoga instruction with free-form painting for the sold-out audience, all of whom took home custom mats and bags.

Adria’s leadership in Detroit through wellness caught the attention of several media outlets including HOUR Detroit and she would grace the cover and pages of their 2018 Health Guide. In the same year, lululemon invited her to serve as an ambassador of their downtown Detroit store and in collaboration, she launched a trauma-informed yoga program for 120 youth at Detroit’s Downtown Boxing Gym, where young boys and girls from her community continue to be inspired to open their bodies and minds to the restorative practice of Yoga.

From diagnosis to life support to digital features on Yoga Journal to holding the stage with NBA professional Derrick Rose, normalizing the conversation around mental health and wellness, Adria began to define her journey as ‘Radical Healing’.

In 2020, Adria’s work came to the forefront as the world faced collective trauma through the pandemic, and in response, she launched the School of Radical Healing, a BIPOC-centered + trauma-informed liberation space cultivating mental and emotional health through somatics, love, and language. The school has since educated hundreds of individuals, practitioners, and educators from all over on The Trauma-Informed Approach to Creating Safe Spaces.

Currently, Adria leads trauma-informed keynotes and workshops at companies and universities like LinkedIn and CUNY, speaking to the art of self-regulation and promoting well-being through mindfulness.

Adria is an RYT-200 Yoga Instructor and carries a certificate as a Trauma-Informed Teacher through Connection Coalition. Beyond her practice, she is a voice of empowerment to many through her social media (16k followers) and works with powerful women through her Elevate 1:1 Coaching Program.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything but a smooth road, but it’s been an abundant one.

Entrepreneurship in and of itself is not for the faint of heart. It is not the alternative to a 9 to 5. It is a sort of calling, and with that calling, comes a lot of nights of not knowing how or when, but remaining faithful to the process.

I think the greatest struggle I have and continue to face is ease to resources as a Black-owned, woman-owned entity. The School of Radical Healing is committed to creating access and equity in wellness by providing costless, trauma-informed education to practitioners, facilitators, and educators to those most impacted by current & past oppressive states, institutions, and practices.

The SORH Scholarship Fund launched in early 2021 in response to the overwhelming number of applicants to our scholarship offering.

In efforts to support the demand, create more access, and get this knowledge into the hands, hearts, & heads of those most impacted, we asked the fund to be supported by those in the community who experience privilege based on their race and class, or sex. This call-out enabled the SORH to educate and empower an additional 21 Black and Indigenous practitioners in 2021 through our scholarship program.

The fund has raised a little over $6,000 and in 2022 we want to double that with the support of our community and larger entities that believe in a more mindful world. Visit https://www.schoolofradicalhealing.com/contribute to contribute.
