Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Fazecas
Hi Abby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was in high school I was super in to baking, a lot of my classmates knew me as the kid who would bring in muffins and cookies and things for everyone. I had a friend ask me to try making French macarons and for the first time I struggled with baking. I was so determined to master these pesky treats though so I tried dozens of different recipes and nothing seemed to work right. Finally, I decided to do some research and experiment with different recipe ratios and after a year of experimenting, I came up with a recipe that worked perfectly for me! I was so excited I started playing around with fun flavor combinations and designs and letting my friends and family taste test them until people started asking if they could buy them for holidays, gifts, and parties. I started making them for people I knew and one day I had someone reach out that I didn’t know saying they heard I made macarons and wanted to place an order. This was the text that made me realize that this was something I really loved doing and I decided to really start to pursue this passion of mine! I created an Instagram account for my macarons and started doing vendor events and I have loved every minute of it! I’ve been making them for almost 9 years now and I seriously can’t believe it because it has been so much fun, although it has come with a lot of late nights, tears, and hard work!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been! I didn’t really start to get macarons that turned out until probably my 20th or 30th batch! Macarons are so particular that even the smallest detail can make them fall apart. I’m not sure what it was, but I was so determined to master them that I refused to give up, and I’m so glad I didn’t give up! I’d say another challenge came when it was time to bake for my first vendor event. I had no idea what to expect, how many people would be there, if people would even buy my macarons, or what I should do to prepare. It was also the largest amount of macarons I had ever made (over 600 macarons!) and I was nervous about failing. Thankfully I had a ton of friends and family who supported me and gave me the encouragement I needed and the event was a smashing success for me, being really close to selling out! I learned so much from my challenging experiences and they have made me and my small business better in the long run!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Right now, I specialize in just French macarons. They are something that I hold really close to my heart because of how hard I worked perfecting my recipe and techniques. I started this business during my sophomore year of college for my Master’s degree in nutrition, so I had to quickly learn how to balance the business and my education. I’d say that my business is probably known for my fun flavors, colors, and designs! While I do more simple macarons on request, what really speaks to my brand is the uniqueness of what I can do. When people inquire to order macarons and ask about the flavors I offer, I send them a long list of flavors I have done before, but I also tell them that I can make virtually any flavor they could think of! I love seeing people’s reactions when they ask for an out-of-the-box flavor or design and they taste them for the first time and their face lights up! I am so proud of the fun and creative brand I’ve created for my business because I think it perfectly encapsulates me as a baker and as a person. One thing I want people to know about The Macaronage is that I am always open to hearing ideas from people, and I go out of my way to make sure that people’s visions come to life through my macarons! I love doing events like parties and weddings because macarons add such an elegant touch to any dessert spread and it is such a pleasure to be a part of special events for others.
