Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiera Henderson.
Hi Tiera, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started Watered Flowers in 2018 on my living room floor. I used to write my way through things and it gave me such a release and a way to express myself that it became exhilarating and therapeutic. I had hundreds of notebooks that I would fill with poetry from the time I was about 10 that I wouldn’t share with anyone it was just a way to express myself unapologetically. In the summer of 2018, I decided to combine those poems and writings in the form of a journal because those writings helped me grow and I figured, if they helped me, they could help someone else like me who has gone through a lot in life and may want to express themselves and overcome whatever it is they could be facing. So, I researched how to make journals and I watched hundreds of YouTube videos and I later went to Joanns fabric and that’s where I found the cover of my first journal I created. It was flower paper that Joann’s sold for about .59 cents and I bought a few and chip paper and glue and I went home to experiment with how to put it together. I started this company with what I had which was about $60 at the time and once I created it by hand I made social media posts introducing the journal and listed them for pre-sale and women all over the world started placing their orders and I used that money to create more journals to sell.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it most certainly hasn’t smooth but it has been enjoyable. I love being a business owner, it is a lot of work but the end results are always rewarding. I remember a time where I was invited to a pop-up shop for my business and the event was about 3 weeks away so I accepted the invitation and about a week after that my son and I caught COVID and I couldn’t leave the house, I couldn’t properly prepare the way I wanted for this event and we tested negative 4 days before the pop-up and I questioned myself. I wanted to call and back out of the event but I went with what I had and I had nothing extra, no banners, or signage just enough for people to know who I am, what I do and the journals themselves and I sold out of that event within an hour. Right then, I knew being a business owner doesn’t always require fan fair all the time but your product and you. You are your advertisement and that event taught me that lesson. I also had times where I needed money and I wasn’t getting as much online so I went out with my journals in the back of my car and sold them to people I would see in stores, or wherever I was, I would talk about Watered Flowers and what it was and I would get a sales to help pay for personal needs for my children and I as well as fund the business itself.
As you know, we’re big fans of Watered Flowers. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Watered Flowers is an inspirational stationary company and our hero product are my journals. Our journals are not ordinary journals, they are filled with encouraging quotes, scriptures and daily exercises for women to do to enhance or create positive mental growth, They are designed to cure mental illness and create a pathway to healthy thinking while overcoming life’s woes. We all go through things in life and how we get through them determines how far we go and these journals help set your life on the proper trajectory to keep you on a steady path of success. This company is known for changing lives for the better and I most proud of the impact it has made on every woman who owns this journal. I offer so many services like mentoring, daily life coaching, daily inspiration, speaking engagements, and women inspirational gatherings.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Being a business owner, you are automatically classified as a risk taker! I started this business with nothing and here it is featured in magazines, and talked about all over the world. I have had customers in other countries and the response I get at times I can’t even put into words because it gives women hope. If I would have not taken a risk and started this business with no knowledge of how to run a company, those women would not have had that ounce of hope these journals give them. I still take risks til this day to get my business out there. I reach out to people, I tell people what Watered Flowers is and why it is essential. I post daily and these things are examples of risks because you don’t know what the result will be, you just hope that it’ll be good.
