Hi Terry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2016, I sat down with my wife and shared an ambitious idea: to build something of our own. We leaned into each other’s strengths, outsourced our weaknesses, and committed fully to the vision. Not long after, she surprised me with my first detailing van as a Father’s Day Gift and we ran full speed.
From day one, our business was built on hard work, constant learning, professional certifications, and genuine relationships with our clients. That foundation became Sylvester’s Luxurious Mobile Detailing, where our belief is simple: luxury isn’t just a look—it’s a feel.
We began with residential clients, which remains our favorite part of what we do. There’s nothing more rewarding than transforming a vehicle and restoring it to a “like-new” condition—bringing back that feeling of confidence and comfort for our clients. A vehicle isn’t just something you drive; for most people, it’s the first experience of the day when they leave the house. It can feel sticky and chaotic, or it can be clean and organized. That’s where we come in, we understand our clients are busy enough so our mobile services seal the deal.
As our reputation grew, so did our reach. We expanded into commercial contracts, servicing office personnel and corporate fleets throughout West Michigan. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of transforming vehicles from the Lakeshore to Lansing, and from Mount Pleasant to Kalamazoo. No matter the location, the people we serve have always been the best part of the journey.
We are looking forward to expanding further!
Beyond the business itself, this venture has given our family something even more meaningful: growth and balance. Building this together has allowed us to better manage our time, support one another, and create a life that aligns with our values. Values that most importantly will leave our stamp on this world. Together we are co-founders of Project Give a Kid a Tie serving the youth of our community. Individually we run men’s and woman’s monthly Motivational Groups catering to adults of all ages. The shift of balance allowing for quality time spent that has maximized the ability to impact has been the most rewarding part of the story.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As any Entrepreneur and Business Owner encounters, there is almost never a smooth road to the journey. But, that is apart of the ride.
Just to name a few struggles we’ve probably all encountered and personally I have encountered as well: Financial struggles in Business progression. Innovation and Action is what it takes. We had to get creative to continually grow to our next levels. In direct correlation to that, Personal financial stress/restrictions when Business moves to slow seasons. I suggest getting a financial advisor for your business and personal finances to ensure you stay prepared. Learning curves in your craft, continual education to ensure your clients are satisfied over what your competitors can offer. A big one, shifting from part time gig to full time career. Some question when is the right time and spend years mapping out the right time, and then there are those of us who take a leap of faith. You start to shift mentally and the questions of when becomes why not.
Your business is constantly adapting. As an owner you’re always evolving…and importantly so is your competition.
I like to look at the struggles as opportunities.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for those just starting: Knowledge is Power. Go learn everything you can from anyone reliable willing to share information. Read Books. Seek out a business mentor. Whatever you can do to excel, improve and evolve…go invest your time into it. Importantly, knowledge is free. There is an abundance of resources and outlets you can gain information and insight from, its up to you to take action.
What I wish I knew starting out: More like what I would have done, I would bet 100 on me from the jump. You are your biggest obstacle, but you get out what you put in.
