Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Miller-Goulait.
Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My experience as a team-level leader began at the age of 18, while working in clothing retail. Over the next 10 years, I had gone from an entry-level keyholder position, to running retail stores as a store manager. I loved retail, but wanted more consistency and flexibility with my schedule, and eventually made my way into the corporate world, as a coordinator and instructional designer with the Leadership Development Team within a Forbes 500 mortgage company in Michigan. I always enjoyed the onboarding and training portions of my leadership roles within retail, and I always had a passion for helping my employees achieve their goals (no matter how big or small they were.) And this new job in corporate had opened my eyes to the idea that I could balance both leadership and training in one role. I excelled on this Leadership Development Team, going from my entry-level role all the way up to leading a team of Instructional Designers, who developed and maintained all the leadership development programming in the company.
Over the years, I had the honor and pleasure of becoming a certified trainer and an expert in the style of leadership that supported and advocated for engaging company culture. And although I loved my work, and saw the amazing positive impact it had, not just on the leaders and employees, but on the success of the organization, I knew this was something that was a luxury not everyone had.
In early 2022, somewhat post-pandemic, my co-worker (and now business partner) Erika Rivera Jaramillo and I decided to get out of the office and out of the house, and begin networking and meeting business owners and leaders from outside organizations. As we spoke with them, and shared the type of work we did with the leadership teams within our organization, we quickly realized what we were doing was a luxury that many organizations just couldn’t afford, but desperately needed.
After a few months of deliberating, and reflecting on my own future and career projections, I realized there was really only one career path that I could think of that brought me immense joy, and fear…Owning my own business. And so in the Summer of 2022, I decided to ask Erika one of the most important questions someone can be asked: Will you be my business partner? And she said yes!
Because we saw the incredible impact investing in leadership development had on an organization, and how it didn’t just cultivate an incredibly engaging culture where people felt safe and valued, but it created an external brand that clients loved and admired as well, we knew our mission was to help create happier, more engaged and inclusive workspaces all around the world, not just here in Michigan.
And so after a few coffee-shop brainstorm sessions, we came up with the name for our business, Monarch Coaching. Inspired by the butterfly effect, where one leader can impact an employee, who impacts their team, then the organization, and ultimately the world!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has absolutely been some struggles, both personally as a Founder, and struggles with the business. Erika and I are experts in leadership, company culture, instructional design, and learning and development…But in the beginning we definitely lacked the business savvy that is needed to grow and scale a business. We’re still learning things every day, but the best advice I could offer to anyone wanting to start a business is to find support, and find it fast. Before diving into funding, learn about all the amazing grant opportunities that may be available to you. Take time to explore all the free business coaching opportunities (such as SCORE or Velocity in Sterling Heights). Build a supportive community of fellow business owners and founders who you can lean on for support. Barter for services when possible. These are all things we learned to do over time, and though they have really helped us in the long run, I definitely wish we would have looked into some of these things earlier.
The biggest struggle I could say having as a new business owner or founder, is ‘you don’t know what you don’t know.’ Surrounding yourself with folks who have ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ will provide you with resources and tools you never knew you needed, and that can take your business to the next level. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Monarch Coaching?
Monarch Coaching transforms company cultures from the top-down through effective and engaging corporate leadership development. What sets us apart from other Leadership Coaches or Trainers is that we work closely with organizations to learn their company values, vision, and desired culture. We then enroll their leadership teams into our online courses and coaching sessions, which not only teach the participants about effective leadership skills, but ties it all into their company’s values and vision. We are proud to say we create emotionally intelligent, and authentic leaders who actually advocate for their company’s culture, and create workplaces where employees are valued, seen, heard, and engaged.
In a world where companies are losing millions of dollars a year just in lost productivity and high turnover costs alone, we not only support the culture of an organization, we support their bottom line as well by increasing retention and engagement.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Organizations who would like to work with us are able to connect with us on a free Discovery Call, so we can learn more about their company’s unique situation regarding their company culture, and the effectiveness of their leadership teams. From there, we’ll be able to identify a program package that works best for them! And once we determine which package, we simply enroll their leaders into our program, and take it from there!
We also work closely with HR partners and firms to offer our leadership services and support to their clients and organizational leadership teams. These collaborations are mutually beneficial, as clients of ours may be in need of HR services, and their clients may be in need of Leadership Development.
