Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Pope.
Hi Sydney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a graduate from Eastern Michigan University (EMU), with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations (PR), and I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) at EMU. As I pursue my masters degree, I work as a Digital Marketing Specialist at Black Girls CODE (BGC), a not-for-profit dedicated to building pathways for young women of color to embrace the current tech marketplace as builders and creators by introducing them to skills in computer programming and technology.
I also conduct freelance PR work. Since starting my business, Sydney Pope Public Relations (SPPR), in 2021, I’ve had a handful of clients and my portfolio is continuing to grow. SPPR offers expertise in social media, advertising, marketing, media relations, public speaking, communications, and graphic design. I am a skilled writer and editor. I can also communicate effectively with target audiences through strategic media relations and social media.
During my final two semesters at EMU, I took courses that allowed me to work with real-life clients where I gained experience in my field of study. I was also able to network and make strong connections, and through those connections, I landed two internships that gave me even more experience. Before graduating from college, I already had a year of experience under my belt and many glowing recommendations from my supervisors and professors, which helped me land my first job as a social media specialist at another company only six months out of college.
As mentioned before, I currently work as a Digital Marketing Specialist at BGC. I have this amazing opportunity to work with BGC because of the connections I made in college. I had an internship with one of BGC’s corporate employees and she remembered the work I did for her. So, she reached out to me to utilize my skills again and assist BGC with a 90-day project as a contracted social media manager through my business, SPPR. When the contracted period was almost over, I was asked to apply for their digital marketing position because they loved my work and my dedication and they wanted to have me on board as an internal employee.
Hard work, perseverance, and determination is what got me to where I am today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My first few years of college weren’t the smoothest, simply because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. During my third year, I signed up for career coaching that was offered through EMU. My career coach gave me tests to find out what careers best fit my personality and what my values and morals were, as well as to find out what I wanted out of my career. My top four results were: Marketing, PR, Advertising, and Business. I ultimately chose PR as my major because the program assisted in finding internships, which was needed to graduate.
After I figured out what I wanted to pursue, the road was smooth and everything came easily to me because I found what I am supposed to be doing. I am continuing to elevate each day.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as loving what you do and doing what you love and getting paid for it, and I would say that I’m successful because that is exactly what I’m doing.
