Hidden Gems: Meet Shahriar Kobir of Checkmate Burgers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shahriar Kobir.

Hi Shahriar, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started with a simple goal — to build something of my own that could bring people together through great food and hospitality. I moved to the United States in late 2023, and like many immigrants, the beginning came with a lot of challenges, uncertainty and hard work. While adjusting to a new country and waiting for work authorization, I spent a lot of time thinking about how I could create a business that reflected both my passion and my community.

Food has always been a big part of my life, so I decided to take a chance and open Checkmate Burger. We started small, focusing on fresh halal food, affordable prices and treating every customer like family. From making our beef patties in-house to creating unique burgers and platters, we wanted to offer something different in the area.

The journey hasn’t been easy. As a small business owner, I wear many hats every day — from cooking and customer service to marketing and operations. But seeing customers return, leave positive reviews and support us has made every challenge worth it. Today, Checkmate Burger continues to grow, and my goal is to keep building a place that the community can truly call their own.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most small business owners, the road has definitely not been smooth. One of the biggest challenges was starting a business in a new country while learning how everything works—from regulations and licensing to marketing and daily operations. There were many moments when resources were limited, and I had to wear multiple hats at once, serving as owner, cook, marketer, customer service representative, and manager.

Another challenge was building awareness. As a new restaurant, we had to earn the trust of customers one meal at a time. Competing with established restaurants and national chains meant we had to focus on quality, consistency, and customer service every day.

The restaurant industry is also highly competitive and unpredictable. Rising food costs, staffing challenges, and maintaining quality while keeping prices affordable have all been ongoing obstacles. There were days when business was slow and moments when I questioned whether all the hard work would pay off.

However, every challenge taught me something valuable. The support from our customers, positive reviews, and seeing people come back with their friends and families kept us motivated. Those experiences helped us grow stronger and continue improving. Looking back, the struggles were an important part of the journey and helped shape both me and the business into what they are today.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Checkmate Burger, our mission is simple: serve fresh, high-quality halal food at affordable prices while treating every customer like family.

We are known for our handcrafted burgers made with fresh, in-house beef patties, flavorful chicken sandwiches, loaded fries, rice platters, and creative specialty menu items. Everything we serve is 100% halal, and we take pride in offering generous portions, bold flavors, and great value without compromising quality.

What sets us apart is our combination of quality, affordability, and hospitality. Many restaurants focus on one or two of those things, but we work hard to deliver all three. We prepare food fresh to order, use recipes developed in-house, and constantly introduce new menu items and specials to keep things exciting for our customers. Whether someone stops in for a quick lunch, a family dinner, or a late-night meal, we want them to leave satisfied and eager to come back.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of the relationships we have built within our community. Seeing first-time guests become regular customers, receiving positive reviews, and being recognized for both our food and customer service means a lot to us. We are not just selling burgers—we are building a local brand that people can trust.

We want readers to know that Checkmate Burger is a locally owned business dedicated to serving delicious halal food, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and providing an experience that keeps customers coming back. Every order is an opportunity for us to earn someone’s trust, and that is something we never take for granted.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a business owner is that mentorship and networking don’t always happen in formal settings. Some of the most valuable advice I’ve received has come from conversations with fellow restaurant owners, suppliers, customers, and community members who were willing to share their experiences.

My advice is to be genuine and focus on building relationships rather than simply asking for help. Attend local business events, join community organizations, connect with other entrepreneurs on social media, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Most successful people are willing to share knowledge if they see that you’re hardworking, respectful, and serious about learning.

For me, networking has worked best by staying involved in the local community and building authentic relationships over time. As the owner of Checkmate Burger, I’ve met many great people through customer interactions, local business groups, and community events. Every conversation is an opportunity to learn something new.

When it comes to finding a mentor, look for someone whose values and work ethic you admire, not just someone who has achieved financial success. A good mentor can help you avoid costly mistakes, provide honest feedback, and encourage you during difficult times. Most importantly, be willing to listen, apply what you learn, and stay patient. Building a business is a long journey, and having the right people around you can make a tremendous difference.
