Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Adams
Hi Natalie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career started in branding and marketing. During this I honed a skill set that centers on using storytelling and visuals to foster emotional connections between brands and their audiences.
This foundation allowed me to easily transition into interior design, where I discovered that the same principles of storytelling applied beautifully to crafting spaces that reflect individual personalities and lifestyles. I was lucky to make a great friend and architect at this time who encouraged me to follow this new path and allowed me to work at her studio.
I then founded my interior design studio and combine my a passion for design with a comprehensive grasp of practical execution, helping clients transform their houses into homes that tell their unique stories.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think owning a business is ever smooth. Getting to where I am now has been a slow and steady transition between one career to the next. I didn’t have the financial privilege of going all in immediately. So I started by taking on clients a little at a time while continuing to work a fulltime position and gradually shifted more of my time to interior design as the business grew. I was able to completely move over to interior design 4 years ago after 3 or so years of doing both.
As you know, we’re big fans of Natalie Adams Interiors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Natalie Adams Interiors is an Ann Arbor based full-service interior design studio focused on full home renovations and new construction as well as space planning, kitchen and bath remodels.
My approach is what sets me apart; it is personal, intuitive, and considered, creating homes that reflect the people who inhabit them. Nothing is copy and pasted. I’m sure there are underlying themes that you can see across all of my designs… I tend to love white paint and natural materials. But my goal is always for the space to reflect the client, not me.
Also my deep understanding of the construction process. For full service clients, I work closely with contractors, builders, and architects and oversee every project to ensure exceptional results that exceed expectations. This part of the process is so important and often overlooked.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a nuanced role in my life and business. On one hand, I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in a family of tradespeople, which provided me with invaluable insights into construction and design from an early age. To have meet a wonderful mentor who encouraged me to move forward. To have a supportive husband who didn’t bat an eye as I abandoned my 20 year career and steady paycheck.
On the other hand, I’ve faced challenges that felt like bad luck, such as market fluctuations or unexpected project setbacks. However, I’ve learned to view these moments as opportunities for growth and adaptation. They’ve pushed me to innovate and refine my approach, ultimately strengthening my business.
In both good and bad luck, I’ve found that persistence, preparation, and a willingness to embrace change have been the most influential factors in my journey.
