Hidden Gems: Meet Michael Charles of Legacy Wheelz, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Charles.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started with a Onewheel and an electric unicycle (EUC). My wife and I were watching a Superbowl ad for Onewheel and I decided I had to have one! So, I found a used Onewheel on marketplace to see what all the buzz was about but my wife, Heather, decided she wanted to go for an electric unicycle, so she purchased a brand new Inmotion V8F and that’s where the story really started. Once she received her EUC (electric unicycle) I decided I’d give it a try, and I was hooked and decided to ditch the Onewheel for a EUC. We both loved the hobby so much that we wanted to make it accessible to everyone in our community. In January 2024 I mentioned to Heather that I wanted to open a store featuring our newfound hobby, EUC’s. I was much surprised when Heather said “ok” and after endless amount of work, April 15th, we opened Legacy Wheelz, LLC. a store where people could come and try PEV’s before they buy them. There is a STRONG online presence for EUC’s and unless you knew someone who had one there was no way to try one out before you spent a lot of your hard-earned money on a new hobby that you have only seen in online videos. We are now in our second year, and the community is getting hooked on personal electric vehicles from electric scooters, Onewheels, EUC’s, and electric bikes and trikes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were so many challenges in the beginning! From our very narrow window that we gave ourselves to open, to finding manufactures that were willing to work with a brand-new store with no sales history but we didn’t let anything stop us. Trying to figure out what the people wanted, they keep us on our toes. I do encourage anyone with a dream to go after it no matter how many obstacles are in your way!

As you know, we’re big fans of Legacy Wheelz, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
From sales, to repairs we do it all! In a small city in Michigan, we are the only one of our kind and we take a huge amount of pride in that. We have people coming from 4 hours away for service work on their PEV’s and that in itself is an honor.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My wife Heather (co-owner) is my ROCK she is the one that keeps everything going in the background!
