Hidden Gems: Meet Matt Parks of 2nd To None Basketball Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Parks.

Hi Matt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My dad brought the game of basketball to me when I was in diapers and since then it has always been an important part of my life. I always wanted to play whether it was in the driveway, at the local community center, at the park, for the school team, etc; I just couldn’t get enough. My dad would take me and my brother everywhere to play and I credit him for my love for the game of basketball. After High School, I played for Northwood University’s JV team and am thankful for that opportunity. I became obsessed with skill and player development during this time. I was constantly looking for new programs and drills to improve my abilities and was in the gym non stop. Once college was over I knew I didn’t want to give playing ball up. It was too much a part of my life. I was constantly playing in men’s leagues and at the local gym, The Freeland Sportszone. I had a few parents reach out to me after watching some pickup games and skill work I was doing at the Sportszone. They had asked if I would workout with their kids for a fee. Pretty soon word of mouth was getting out and I knew this was a great opportunity to make something I love a career. My brother, Logan, joined me on my journey and was a main piece of this whole thing until his passing in 2022. I could never have gotten this thing moved forward without his help. The Freeland Sportszone supported me and has partnered with me ever since. From starting with strictly 1on1 workouts to the many classes and training options we have today, 2nd To None has undergone a lot of changes through the years. We have so many of our guys who have trained with us through the years coming back to be trainers on staff. With these new additions to our team and so much support from the community, I am looking forward to what the future holds for us. There has been a lot of people who have helped make this what it is today and I am truly thankful for them all.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have endured many struggles on my journey. Throughout High School and still today I fight with anxiety whether it be in my personal life or sports related. When I first started, I was working 2 other jobs on top of training until I could eventually make training my full time commitment. That year was tough but needed. In the early years, I had let personal issues affect me to the point I took focus off of my business & players. This caused business to drop and made me realize I had to get my act together, not just for the business but for my players. Covid was a challenge as gyms were shut down so we had to pivot to outdoor workouts at the park. We trained a lot less during that time but ended up finding our footing. The passing of my brother has been hard not just on me, but on many of the players in 2nd To None who trained with him. I knew he would want me to be tough and keep running things smoothly so myself and the players in our program have been doing just that in his honor.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
