Hidden Gems: Meet Lumyra Mitchell of Miheat Salon Suites

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lumyra Mitchell.

Hi Lumyra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
If you’d told me ten years ago that I’d be opening Miheat Salon Suites in a converted church, I wouldn’t have believed you. My journey as an entrepreneur really started behind a mountain of flour and fondant—I was “the cake lady,” the proud owner of Myra’s Sweet Tooth Bakery. I crafted towering wedding cakes and decadent desserts for everyone in Detroit. Creating beautiful, joyful moments was my thing. But, sometimes, our dreams get derailed, and I had to close my bakery.
Still, I always knew I was meant for something more. Even in the quietest moments, the drive to be my own boss never went away. But cakes weren’t my path anymore, so I worked 9-to-5 jobs—grateful, but restless. I felt my calling tugging at me, but I wasn’t sure where it would take me next.
Everything shifted one day at my best friend’s wedding. We all went to get our nails done and, as I watched the nail tech working, a thought struck me: “I can do that.” The funny thing is, I had never touched anybody’s nails before. But I followed that instinct straight into my first nail class—where my shaky, childish nail art made it clear I had a long way to go. It was humbling. But I wasn’t discouraged.
Instead, I got obsessed. I practiced relentlessly—on myself, my friends, my family. I wanted to be great, not just good. So I signed up for nail school. As a mother working full-time, I enrolled in a four-month program that took me seven months to complete. Every late-night drive, every exhausted morning, was worth it when I graduated in 2022. My daughter’s pride in me was everything.
Miheat Nails was born right there in my living room, fueled by hustle, grit, and love. I soon outgrew the space, so I renovated my basement and worked there for three years. Yet, I kept asking myself: “Is this it? Do I want to settle?” The answer was always no. I didn’t want to work under anyone or just rent a corner somewhere. I dreamed bigger.
So, I did the unthinkable—I decided to build a place for myself and for other entrepreneurs like me. I saved $50,000 in cash in just one year—every sacrifice fueling my vision. Then, out of nowhere, the right building appeared: an old church, ready for a new chapter and a new kind of community. Turning it into Miheat Salon Suites was a labor of love and faith.
There are a few final touches left, but this November, the doors open wide. I want people to walk in and feel not just the beauty of the space, but the power of perseverance. If you’re wondering how I got here? It’s simple: I refused to give up on myself and my vision—no matter how unconventional the path.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not, it hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been moments so tough they nearly broke me. I was scammed out of thousands; I put my faith—and my hard-earned money—into a commercial property, only to discover that the person who “sold” it to me never owned it at all. The paperwork was a sham. That loss hurt, deeply. But it couldn’t kill my dream.
Finding the right property wasn’t any easier. Most of what I could afford in Detroit needed massive renovations, sometimes down to the roof—and trust me, replacing a roof is no small feat. There were mistakes, setbacks, and moments where it felt like I was moving backward instead of forward.
But I refused to quit. Every challenge, every lesson, only fueled my determination to keep going. I know I’ll make more mistakes along the way, but now I see each one not as a failure, but as a stepping stone to something greater.
