Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierstyn Opasik.
Hi Kierstyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been passionate about the fashion industry. I even remember dressing up as a fashion designer for career day in 3rd grade. As I grew older, my interest only deepened, and I began sharing beauty and fashion content on YouTube. Then in 2015 as a teenage girl, I struggled to find bikinis that I loved. Around this time, I was also becoming increasingly passionate about marine life, recycling, the ocean… basically anything beachy and tropical. This is when I decided I would one day start my own sustainable swimwear line.
Once I got to college I joined VIM Magazine, a fashion club at MSU, continuing my interest in fashion. Finally, in 2024, I brought my vision to life by launching my own brand.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. My biggest challenge was ensuring my business was set up properly and legally. I thought I had every thing ready to go, and then very close to my launch I realized I hadn’t set up sales tax yet. Luckily I was able to get it set up correctly very quickly.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Keek Kinis?
Keek Kinis is a Michigan-based sustainable swimwear line, offering high quality and flattering pieces. We specialize in versatile, timeless designs and offer a range of sizes including XS – XL. I’m incredibly proud of the exceptional quality we deliver while making a positive impact on the environment.
Currently, Keek Kinis is an online store, but we frequently participate in local pop-ups. Be sure to follow us on Instagram @keekkinis to stay updated!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
It is so incredibly important to lean on your network and connections. When I was struggling to set up my business, I reached out to the Director of Alumni Venture Support at Michigan State University and he was so kind and helpful. Additionally, through the pop-ups and events that I’ve attended I’ve met so many other talent entrepreneurs who are so supportive of one another.
