Hidden Gems: Meet Katie Maurer of Katie Maurer Pilates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Maurer.

Hi Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was a dancer my whole life, on track to dance professionally. Through this journey, I sustained several injuries and the only thing I found to help me recover and dance my best was Pilates. I received a BFA in dance from Point Park University, and while I was there, I decided to get my Pilates teaching certification. I helped my peers through injuries through enhancing body awareness and strengthening muscle imbalances. This inspired me to continue on the path of improving people’s quality of live through movement. So, I decided to get my master’s in Movement Science from the University of Michigan, which is what brought me to Ann Arbor. Now I continue to teach Pilates at the Pilates Barn and Wellness and the Pilates Loft in downtown Ann Arbor. Teaching Pilates has brought me so much joy and fulfillment by seeing how differently clients walk out of the studio compared to how they walked in feeling. It is truly magical and I am very grateful that I get to do this as my job.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been a few challenges, since I was completing my certification while I was a full-time student there were some long days. I did my certification through the Pilates studio I went to in my hometown of Hilton Head, so I had to fly back and forth once a month for almost a year. Then once COVID happened everything switched virtual which was an obstacle in itself. Pilates is a very hands-on, detail-oriented practice, so trying to see if somebody’s pelvis is tilted is much harder through a zoom camera angle. But this only made my teaching better because I really had to pay attention and notice subtle changes in a person’s body that I don’t think I would have discovered until later on in my teaching experience. Also, working with humans in an intimate setting provides its own challenges as everybody has a different personality and movement experience. So, navigating how to deal with different clients can be challenging at times, but making people feel good, strong, and successful is the key to a happy client.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Katie Maurer Pilates LLC?
