Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Cruz.
Hi Julie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was young, creativity has always been my comfort zone—drawing, illustrating, and making things was how I made sense of the world. But like many kids with a talent for science, I was nudged toward more “practical” fields. I studied chemistry in college, but even there I found myself drawn back to the visual. Organic chemistry in particular captured my imagination—not just the formulas, but the way it revealed invisible reactions and beautiful molecular patterns. I started asking: where’s the space for creativity in this?
That space finally opened up after college, when I landed a job in public health and worked with a boss who was building a design studio inside a research lab. It was a breakthrough moment—I saw how design could bridge science and storytelling, helping translate dense research into something real, accessible, and impactful. From there, I dove into human-centered design and UX research, weaving my scientific background into a creative career path. Over the years, I’ve worked across tech, health, and nonprofit sectors, always focused on simplifying the complex. After years in-house, I finally returned to what sparked my passion in the first place—launching Julie Cruz Studio to help mission-driven organizations tell better, more engaging visual stories.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was finding my footing in a field that didn’t quite have a predefined lane for someone like me. I’ve always been drawn to both research and design, science and art—and for a long time, it felt like I had to choose between them. I bounced between roles in UX research, product design, and content strategy, sometimes worrying that I was doing “too many things” or didn’t fit neatly into one box.
But over time, I realized the common thread in all of my work has always been visual storytelling—taking something complex, whether it’s a research finding or a product interface, and shaping it into a clear, engaging narrative. That realization helped me carve out my own space. Now, running Julie Cruz Studio, I finally get to fuse all of those skills together—design, strategy, research—into a creative practice that’s both analytical and artistic.
