Hidden Gems: Meet Joseph Leon of Social Brew Cafe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Leon.

Hi Joseph , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Social Brew Cafe in September 2020. Hospitality has always been part of my life because I grew up around my family’s restaurant. Being around that environment taught me early on that people remember how you make them feel, and I eventually found that coffee was the avenue where I wanted to create that experience myself.

Like a lot of small businesses, the beginning was a lot of trial and error. I spent years learning the craft, investing in professional equipment, and building a mobile espresso cart that could deliver the same quality at an event that you would expect from a specialty coffee shop. There were plenty of moments where growth felt slow, and I questioned whether it would all come together, but I stayed focused on improving the product and experience.

Things really began to take shape in 2025 when we started booking more weddings, corporate events, employee appreciation events, and private gatherings throughout Metro Detroit. Today, Social Brew Cafe is a mobile specialty coffee catering company built on a simple idea: bring specialty coffee to you, wherever the event is.

What makes us different is that we intentionally keep our focus narrow. Rather than trying to offer everything, we concentrate on making exceptional espresso based drinks and creating an experience guests remember. Whether it’s a wedding, a company event, or a private celebration, the goal has always been simple: serve great coffee and leave people talking about it long after the event is over.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road, and honestly, I would not expect it to be. When I started Social Brew Cafe in 2020, I was selling coffee online before I found the right direction for the business. It took time to realize that the bigger opportunity was not shipping coffee to people, but bringing a specialty coffee experience directly to them at weddings, corporate events, and private gatherings.

The biggest challenges were the same ones many small business owners face. Learning how to build a website, market the business, and get found online was a steep learning curve. Finding the right equipment took plenty of trial and error and a significant investment before I felt confident in the setup. And there were long stretches where bookings were slow, which can test your confidence when you’re putting time, money, and energy into something you believe in.

What kept me going was focusing on the product and the experience. I believed that if the coffee was exceptional and the service felt effortless for clients, the business would eventually find its footing. Looking back, those slower years forced me to be patient and continually improve. Today, many of the things clients appreciate most about Social Brew Cafe came directly from the lessons learned during those early challenges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Social Brew Cafe is built around a simple idea: bringing specialty coffee directly to people. Based in South Lyon, we serve weddings, corporate events, employee appreciation events, private parties, and community gatherings throughout Metro Detroit, creating a coffee shop experience wherever people are gathering.

What sets us apart is our focus on quality and simplicity. We intentionally specialize in espresso based coffee rather than trying to offer a little bit of everything. Every part of our setup, from the commercial equipment we use to the workflow behind the cart, is designed to deliver coffee that rivals what you would expect from a specialty coffee shop.

I am most proud of the experience we create for our clients and their guests. Coffee naturally brings people together, and it is rewarding to watch guests gather around the cart, start conversations, and enjoy a drink made specifically for them. Many of our bookings come from referrals and repeat clients, which tells me we are delivering the kind of experience people remember.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: bring great coffee to people, make the process easy for our clients, and create an experience that leaves a lasting impression long after the event is over.

What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is being able to give more than I take. Business is often measured by revenue, growth, or the number of customers you serve, but I think real success comes from creating value for other people and making a positive impact in your community.

With Social Brew Cafe, that means showing up to an event and helping create an experience people genuinely enjoy. Coffee has a way of bringing people together, whether it’s coworkers connecting at a company event, guests celebrating at a wedding, or friends gathering at a private party. Being a small part of those moments is something I never take for granted.

I also believe success is building something that serves others while leaving room to keep growing. If I can continue creating memorable experiences, serving people well, and leaving things better than I found them, I consider that a successful life and a successful business.

At the end of the day, success is not about what you accumulate. It’s about the value you create, the people you help, and the impact you leave behind.
