Hidden Gems: Meet Jonah Jasman of Michigan Embroidery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonah Jasman.

Hi Jonah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I screen printed on glassware for 8-10 years, eventually took a job as a screen printer to decorate clothing, somehow ended working in the embroidery department of that company and I enjoyed it much more than screen-printing. Started out doing on and off help when I was needed and eventually was running all of the embroidery machines by myself and decided I wanted to run my own shop the way I wanted with new machines and technology. I put a ton of time and effort into researching what machines I wanted, had to learn how to operate new machines I wasn’t used to, but it all worked out and now I’m going into my second year of business. It was great first year, better than I could have expected and already planning on needing to grow the business with more machines and hiring staff to keep up with demand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were plenty of struggles mainly that I had zero experience in starting a business or running one. Thankfully I have a great support group of friends and family that have their own businesses and provided me with support and knowledge during the whole process.

As you know, we’re big fans of Michigan Embroidery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
MI Embroidery LLC. – Michigan Embroidery specializes in custom embroidery, but also offer screen printing, Direct To Film, patch application, custom design work. I think what sets Michigan Embroidery apart from everyone else is that all of the work done here probably means more to me than it does to the customer in many cases. I pride myself in my work and I don’t want to put out subpar or standard work. Branding is a work in progress it’s a new business; it will eventually be a name everyone knows and goes to if they want exceptional work done.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I try not to take unnecessary risks; I think a major risk anyone takes when starting a business is the initial investment. I don’t have a ton more on the topic I take calculated risks, plan in advance and stay the course.
