Hidden Gems: Meet Jazlyn Lindsay of The Jazz Report

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazlyn Lindsay.

Hi Jazlyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got my start after graduating with my bachelor’s degree in Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism from Wayne State University in 2017. Post graduation, I landed my first news job as a Digital Content Producer & Digital Reporter at KRCG 13 in Jefferson City, Missouri. There I learned the craft of digital storytelling and managing social media platforms. I wrote, produced, and anchored the first digital weekend news segment that highlighted trending stories across the mid-Missouri area.

After working for KRCG 13, I returned home to Detroit and took a 4 1/2 year career pause after having both of my daughters (now 6 & 4 years old). After taking time away, I knew I was ready to get back into media, but I didn’t want to work at a traditional media outlet. In June 2023, I was blessed to receive an offer as Social Media Manager for the Detroit Police Department where I led an initiatives and a team that completely changed the landscape of law enforcement social media in Detroit. After one year, I took a promotion to work as Social Media Manager in the mayors office, ultimately leading to me returning back to public safety working as Social Media Manager Media Manager for the Detroit Fire Department.

Even though I love working in city government, I always knew I wanted to be a person that shares the positive stories of what’s happening in Detroit. I wanted to help amplify the voices of those who local news stations may not be able to cover, ultimately being a part of shaping the narrative of how the world sees Detroit. This led to me establishing The Jazz Report in June 2025.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an extremely eye opening road. Learning how to navigate being in different rooms and spaces on my own, researching stories to cover, networking to build relationships, and overall finding the confidence to use my own voice and believing it will resonate with people.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Jazz Report is a Detroit-based media company using content creation and digital storytelling to document the people, businesses, and culture that make this city move — from the inside out.

We produce original content, community resources, live experiences, and creator education — all rooted in the belief that Detroit’s stories deserve to be told by someone who actually lives them.

The Jazz Report isn’t just content.
It’s a community media institution rooted in amplifying Detroit voices.

I offer media coverage, storytelling workshops, and social media training to businesses that need assistance establishing a social media foundation & strategy.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to grow The Jazz Report into an ecosystem that helps offers a career pipeline for aspiring journalists & media professionals.

From career opportunities, networking, and access to exposure, making the road to success easier for the next generation of storytellers….something I wish I had in college.
