Hidden Gems: Meet Jazlyn Lindsay of The Jazz Report

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazlyn Lindsay.

Hi Jazlyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my start after working as an intern at WDIV Local 4 News with producers in their special projects unit. After graduating from Wayne State University with my bachelors degree in Communications with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism, I landed my first news job as a Digital Reporter & Digital Content Producer at the CBS affiliate KRCG13 in Jefferson City, Missouri. It was there that I learned how to manage social media platforms and the art of digital storytelling. I created wrote, produced, and anchored the stations’ first ever digital weekend segment “Mo Trends”, which focused on highlighting trending stories of the mid Missouri area. After 8 months, I came back home to Detroit and took a 4 1/2 career pause after giving birth to my two daughters (now 6 & 4 years old).

In June of 2023, I landed a position back in my field as the Socia Media Manager for the Detroit Police Department. I was so excited to be able to share stories to help bridge the gap between our law enforcement and community members. After one year, I accepted a promotion to work as Social Media Manager for the City of Detroit. After a short time there, I decided to return back to public safety, currently working as the Social Media Manager for the Detroit Fire Department.

I feel extremely blessed to be able to share the amazing things our city government does, but I always knew I wanted to share the positivity of what our residents are doing. That’s where The Jazz Report came from. I wanted to tell the stories of real Detroiters from our perspective, not outside news/media outlets. I wanted the world to see our community how we see it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been an eye opener.

Learning how to navigate rooms to meet new people, research what’s going on around you, building connections to find new stories.

But overall, i have very much enjoyed my journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Jazz Report?
The Jazz Report is a Detroit-based media company using content creation and digital storytelling to document the people, businesses, and culture that make this city move — from the inside out.

We exists to close the gap between Detroit’s stories and the platforms that tell them. We produce original content, community resources, live experiences, and creator education — all rooted in the belief that Detroit’s stories deserve to be told by someone who actually lives them.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe to be great at anything, you have to be willing to take risks.

My biggest risks having to sacrifice my time in motherhood to tend to what I truly wanted to do. Sometimes mom guilt is a lot, but I know it’s paying off because my daughters love watching my videos.

I want to teach my daughters that any dream they have is not out of reach, no matter how old you are. I felt like I was getting a late start and was behind for so long, but taking that risk and betting on myself is starting to really pay off.
