Hidden Gems: Meet Jay Williams of Bow Tie Orthodontics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Williams.

Jay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I wanted to be an orthodontist from age 11. I got my braces at that age, and my orthodontist seemed to just love every minute of every day in his practice. Fast forward to when I was in dental school, I started to appreciate how rewarding it was to give people smiles they can be proud of. Getting into dental school and orthodontics residency was very hard work, but I’m so glad I put that hard work in and was able to achieve a dream I set for myself at age 11! I worked in 4 other dental practices as their orthodontist until I was fortunate enough to buy my own, and now we have grown to three metro Detroit locations!

On the personal side, I got married in 2014 to Liz (whom I met in college at Notre Dame). We have three children – Kade, Norah, and Finley. I love golfing, Detroit sports, and spending time with my family and friends.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Only about 5% of dentists get accepted into orthodontic residency programs. You have to crush dental school in order to be able to get into orthodontics! The hardest part about this career path is the debt. Forbes has articles stating that graduating orthodontist have the HIGHEST average debt of any career in the USA. Additionally, balancing school, social life, personal life, getting married, and starting a family all at the same time is just about impossible, especially if you want to sleep at all… 🙂

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We provide orthodontic services to patient of all ages (our youngest is 6 and our oldest patient is in her 80s!!!). We provide braces, expanders, clear aligners, night guards, TMJ therapy, and whitening. Our practice prides itself on our accessibility, and the vibes in our office. We like to think that we don’t feel like a dental office from the moment you step in the door.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I consume TONS of podcasts about college football, and am a HUGE sports fan. Odds are, in the evenings, I’m watching sports all times of year. I also grew up reading the Harry Potter series and like to re-read them, especially in fall/winter months with a cup of coffee.
