Hidden Gems: Meet Jason Underhill of Today’s Fitness LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Underhill.

Hi Jason , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been interested in fitness, working out on and off for many years. In 2008, I became more serious about training and began exploring the idea of opening a fitness center in Evart, Michigan. Although I never found the right location, that vision stayed with me.

When the factory where I was working closed permanently, I found myself at a crossroads. During that time, my wife asked if I still wanted to open a fitness center, and my answer was an immediate yes. Shortly after, I found a location in the Village of Tustin, and that opportunity became the turning point.

From the beginning, my goal has been simple: to help people. That is one of the reasons we intentionally keep our membership prices affordable. I believe that if people cannot afford access to a gym, then we are not truly serving the community. Helping people may mean providing guidance on workouts, encouragement, or simply being a listening ear when someone is having a difficult day.

We opened our doors in December of 2012, and for the past 13 years, I have done everything I can to support and serve our community through fitness.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. Keeping membership rates affordable also limits our ability to hire additional staff, and there are ongoing costs associated with maintaining and repairing equipment to ensure a safe and reliable facility. In addition, there are challenges that come with educating members on proper equipment care and addressing occasional carelessness or lack of respect for shared resources. These are realities of operating a community-focused fitness center, and we continue to address them with patience and responsibility.

As you know, we’re big fans of Today’s Fitness LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a 24/7 fitness center, allowing members to sign up and receive a key card that provides access at any time. Our facility offers both cardio and weight-training equipment, and for a small fitness center, we maintain a strong and well-rounded selection.

Recently, I became a certified personal trainer, which has allowed me to serve our members at a higher level. This enables me to provide more structured guidance, individualized training, and additional support to help people reach their health and fitness goals.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I appreciate most about this community is its size. It is a small village of about 200 people, which allows for close relationships and a strong sense of connection. At the same time, that small size can be challenging, and there are moments when I wish the community were a bit larger. Like many small towns, it brings both unique strengths and real limitations.
