Hidden Gems: Meet Jamie Kern of Mountain Movers of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Kern

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was getting fed up with working my 9-5 and not getting ahead in life. With the prices of everything going up and recently purchasing my first home I started brainstorming on what I could do to get our family into a better place financially. I had a few ideas one of them being a moving business. The idea had originally struck me when we helped a contractor we were working with (at my concrete job) move his family from their house to another in the Sand Point area. Fast forward a couple years later and the idea was still on my mind. I was visiting my brother at his house one day and we got to talking about how we wanted to make a change in our lives because we were both struggling financially. I had told him about my idea on starting a moving business and he encouraged me to start the business. From there we came up with a name and put out a test flier on social media to gauge interest. A few calls came in so we ran with it and we continue to build the business. I contacted a CPA and got registered with the state, made business cards, and shirts to help spread the word.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a first time business owner it was a lot of learning. I didn’t even know where to start but luckily I have friends who have started their own business within the community who offered great advice and led me to the right places and people. The community has been incredible with their help, support and advice. I’m blessed to have their support.

We’ve been impressed with Mountain Movers of Michigan, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a moving company who specializes in household moving both local and long distance. We also offer junk removal services, heavy item moving such as gun safes, pianos, etc., and furniture and other large item deliveries.

What sets us apart is our positive and upbeat attitude and our willingness to go to whatever lengths it takes to get the job done and make our customers happy. If we are doing a move we don’t just drop off the items and leave. We’re willing to help disassemble and assemble any items that need be and help with hooking up or installing appliances. We’re willing to do whatever it takes to make our customers lives easier. I know how stressful it can be during the moving process. So however we can help lighten the load we are more than happy to help do so.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a big into the outdoors. I loved hunting and fishing. My grandpa and grandma lived on Drummond island in the UP and I loved spending my summers up there with my grandparents and cousins. We would go rollerblading, ride bikes, and do lots of swimming and fishing. My dad and I would also go up there every winter for a whole week for the opening of gun season. We had a hunting cabin deep in the woods and it was like our manly get away which was important for me growing up with 4 sisters. Back there there were no phones, no electricity, and no other people for miles and miles. Just each others company in God’s country. Many of my favorite childhood memories are from our times up north.

I was a happy go lucky kid who loved goofing off and making others laugh. Sometimes it got me in trouble though whether it be from having Roman candle wars and burning a hole in our screen door or causing a ruckus in class. It did end up landing me the title of class clown. I also always loved music and had a little rap career of my own. My brothers and I got a little taste of small town fame and had a blast creating music together.
