Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Moore.
Hi Gregory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always interested in fitness and health. When I graduated high school and I set myself on a path to be a personal trainer. I worked with my neighbor as a technician at a physical therapy clinic while I studied for the certification exam and at 19 years old, just barely, I was the youngest personal trainer at Lifetime Fitness in Novi, MI. I learned a ton from the veteran trainers there and went into Athletic Training and eventually teaching at Eastern Michigan University. We could linger on those aspects of the story, but I eventually decided to return to school for my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Oakland University. I really felt like I found my sweet spot in Physical Therapy adding a love for manual therapy to my love for fitness and training. After graduating, my career in sports medicine had many facets. I became interested in rotational power training and baseball development. I wrote strength training programs for high school and college programs. I was selected by my company in 2016 to assist the Detroit Lions at training camp and I interviewed with the head athletic trainer of the Chicago Cubs, which allowed me to learn how trainers and therapists worked together in pro baseball. After Covid changed a number of people’s lives in healthcare, I moved on to a new company and I began to yearn to be a personal trainer again. I decided to start my own business following the lead of a couple of great therapists that I knew that desired to treat people more personally than the typical large clinic setting allowed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to say that since I started working on my business full time I have had a path full of serendipity. Perhaps we create our own good will, in a way, but when I needed a physical location to expand my practice, the perfect place materialized and the old tenant had just left. When I needed to expand and hire a new physical therapist, a friend from high school brought her daughter to see me and told me of her nephew who was looking. With that said, there are certainly difficulties starting a business. It is a leap of faith, in a way, and I could not have gotten to where I am without relaying on business owners and entrepreneurs that I know. Seeking and taking there advice, being patient and picking the right spots to invest time and money.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Moore Performance Health provides one on one physical therapy, shockwave therapy, and personal training services. I established it so that I could live up to my ideals of how I feel physical therapy should be for patients, and to allow the freedom to return to personal training. This way I can maximally effect the lives of patients and clients. Take them from an injured state back to a ready state and from there take them back to a high performing state, motivated and informed about safe and effective fitness training. I have even noticed that in some cases switching to personal training has actually done more for someone pain and function, than staying in a “physical therapy mindset.” For example one of my patients that I saw for chronic back pain with a spondylolisthesis was considering surgery. The time wasn’t right so when the physical therapy benefit ran out they started training with me. After a few months of consistently training with me twice a week she commented that she has not felt better in years and wouldn’t even consider surgery. Functionally she is stronger, balance better and even jump now, where she would not have tried before. Another true tell will come in the next few weeks when she has a bone density scan and we see if she has improved her bone mineral density. These are all things that couldn’t have happened without treating the whole spectrum of physical health.
Moore Performance Health also elected to become a shockwave therapy provider because the service allows us to help conditions that are resistant to typical physical therapy. Shockwave therapy is non invasive regenerative medicine and can help with difficult, chronic cases of tendon and fascial pain. It also can help improve bone healing in cases of Osgood Schlatter, osteochondritis dissecans, stress fractures and non union fractures. These are all things that are difficult to rehab and shockwave therapy access in southeast Michigan is not very robust. We work together with great doctors in the regenerative medicine community and primary care sports medicine in cases where surgery is not an option despite ongoing pain, or someone is trying to avoid surgery. It has been incredible to see results where I once struggled to gain traction despite my years of experience and greatest efforts.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Moore Performance Health follows a “hybrid” cash based model. In order to provide one on one services we accept only the best paying insurances, and if we are out of network with your insurance you can pay us a cash our rate. We provide you a superbill with all the information you need to seek reimbursement from your insurance’s out of network benefit.
We also collaborate with local physicians and would benefit from physicians learning of the value of shockwave therapy and a physical therapy model that provides the personal attention and skills of a seasoned physical therapist. In the same way that other businesses are spread through word or mouth and the power of social media, we can benefit. The best support we get is from the patients and clients who come, have a transformative experience and refer friends and family to us.
