Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Maus.
Hi Cheryl, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I founded Maus Haus Gallery after seeing first-hand how many talented local artists struggled to find a welcoming platform to share their work—and how many Detroit-area neighborhoods felt excluded from the city’s thriving arts scene. My vision was to create not just another gallery, but a creative hub that unites neighborhoods, breaks down barriers, and champions artistic access for everyone. For example, at our very first exhibit, a family told me it was their first time seeing local art up close. That moment made me realize how powerful it is when art becomes accessible, familiar, and inspiring to a whole community. Today, Maus Haus Gallery is where artists and neighbors connect, learn, and grow together—with every event designed to foster belonging, celebrate creativity, and spark both new ideas and new friendships.
Maus Haus Gallery is more than a local art gallery—it’s a creative launchpad for emerging artists and a cultural connector for the community. We provide artists with their first opportunities to exhibit professionally, reach wider audiences, and build confidence in their craft. For instance, our “New Perspectives” series gave first-time exhibitors a sold-out opening night and launched several into local museum group shows.
Our gallery doubles as an educational hub, offering workshops and mentorship for artists and art lovers. We team up with major museums and historical institutions to host collaborative programs—recently, we partnered with the Detroit Institute of Arts to bring pop-up talks and hands-on activities right into the neighborhoods.
Always looking ahead, we use technology to make art more engaging and accessible, including virtual gallery tours and interactive Q&As with visiting creatives. Everything we do centers on breaking barriers, nurturing talent, and building lasting bridges between artists, cultural organizations, and the Detroit community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are halfway through 2025, and Maus Haus Gallery has exceeded expectations in connecting new artists with the local community. Since our establishment in 2023, our core priority has been to bridge the gap between artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts. We aimed to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable and appreciated. I am confident that we will continue to grow these connections and build relationships, including partnerships with local businesses and inviting metro Detroit neighborhoods to visit. For instance, our annual photography call had 12 applicants in 2024, but we doubled that amount to 24 applicants for 2025, demonstrating our increasing reach and engagement.
However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in establishing a membership platform for artists. This initiative would allow them to participate in calls without relying solely on social media or email newsletters for information. Additionally, memberships could incentivize artists to invite new visitors to the gallery while providing them with new gallery merchandise as a token of appreciation. We are targeting a launch for this initiative by January 2026 to align with the start of the new fiscal year.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Maus Haus Gallery, LLC?
Maus Haus Gallery isn’t just an art gallery — it’s a space where community and creativity collide. We’re dedicated to making art accessible for everyone in Southeast Michigan, connecting talented emerging artists with audiences in fresh, welcoming ways. Unlike traditional galleries that can sometimes feel exclusive, we specialize in breaking down barriers and providing a platform for first-time exhibitors, experimental work, and genuine community engagement.
We’re known for our collaborative approach and educational outreach. Our workshops and partnerships with major art institutions bring artists, collectors, and curious neighbors together — whether you’re a lifelong art lover or walking into a gallery for the first time.
What truly sets Maus Haus apart is our commitment to inclusivity: every artist and visitor is greeted with warmth, encouragement, and the invitation to not just view art, but belong to the experience. We believe that art has the power to transform neighborhoods and lives, and our gallery is proof that you don’t need an insider connection or elite background to be a vital part of the local art scene.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of being a launchpad for both artists and art appreciators. From sold-out first exhibitions to family-friendly pop-up shows and virtual tours, Maus Haus Gallery is known as the place where new stories begin and where everyone is encouraged to discover their creative voice.
For your readers, here’s what we hope you remember: Whether you’re looking to exhibit your work, attend an inspiring event, or just feel more connected to the region’s creative energy, Maus Haus Gallery is here for you. We’re building a cultural hub that welcomes all — and your next favorite artist (or creative spark) might just be waiting here.
What makes you happy?
What truly makes me happy is seeing people connect — whether it’s an emerging artist celebrating their very first sale, a visitor experiencing local art for the first time, or two creative strangers striking up a conversation at one of our exhibits. There’s something really magical about watching barriers come down and seeing genuine excitement, inspiration, or a sense of belonging spark in someone’s eyes.
That sense of community—knowing that Maus Haus Gallery is helping people feel seen, welcomed, and creatively inspired—is the most rewarding feeling for me. The happiest moments are always when I get to witness art changing lives, even in small ways. That’s why I do what I do every day.
