Hidden Gems: Meet Brandon LaFontaine of Rabid SEO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon LaFontaine.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I fell into SEO and PPC marketing through an unlikely path. I was let go from my role as a Family Pastor after I applied for a Senior Pastor position at a different church. Once the administration found out I had applied elsewhere, they decided to let me go.

Fortunately, I landed at a marketing agency that trained me in the key principles of SEO. After coaching and creating digital strategies for over 70 clients, I realized I could offer these services to clients directly. I began to network among my peers and look for small businesses that needed help getting found online. Though I started out working for next to nothing, I was able to create dramatic results quickly. That success opened the door for more and more opportunities.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In terms of delivering results, the road has been incredibly smooth. I’ve had clients experience ‘growing pains’ because the results came so fast. One client actually lost an administrator who quit because she wasn’t prepared to go from answering 2 calls a day to 15 calls a day! That same client eventually told me they had their best quarter in 25 years.

The struggle hasn’t been the work itself, but rather the perception of the industry. It is difficult to explain the value of SEO without sounding like a salesperson or, frankly, a conman, because so many businesses have been burned before. The difficulty is walking the line between explaining the technical value of SEO—which can make people’s eyes glaze over—and proving that I operate with integrity in an industry known for cutting corners.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a small farming community in the middle of nowhere, Indiana. My closest neighbors were actually my grandparents, who lived a quarter-mile down the road. I was a pretty typical kid—I loved reading and watching Batman and Ninja Turtles at home, but I would jump at any chance to get outside and play sports with my friends.
