Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Boucher.
Hi Brandon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dream was to be a Navy SEAL ever since I was a kid and heard about them from my “Uncle Dave.” He wasn’t my real uncle, just someone we rented a place from. He was a SEAL in Vietnam. Anyway, when I got my chance, I ended up rupturing my ACL and tearing my MCL and my menisci in my right knee…that was it. I was done. I was med-boarded out of the fleet and started my life as a civilian. Until 9/11, I was recalled to the military because I had maintained my top secret clearance. I was sent back to intelligence specialist school in Fort Meade and ended up in Uzbekistan 12 weeks later. During my time at K2 I was working for Joint Special Operations Command as an intelligence specialist. This was supposed to be a 6-month deployment; it turned into 14 months. During that time I went out on about 10 missions outside the wire and saw a lot of video and photographs of truly evil things.
In 2007 I was diagnosed with PTSD through the VA. In fact, on the PTSD Checklist scale, which goes from 15 to 85, I was at a 57. After trying nearly everything I could for 5-6 years, with little result, I was told that PTSD isn’t cured; it’s managed, and that I would have to live with this condition. This revelation was my “hold my beer” moment. I found that unexable. So I went looking for the esoteric side, or the spiritual side. After lots of knowledge seeking and trying new things, I found meditation specifically and the Modern Mystery School. 6 months later, I went back to my VA clinician, took my PTSD Checklist self-evaluation, and scored a 19. So I know this stuff works, and I need to bring my story to others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of self-mastery is never easy. I struggled with self-medication in the form of alcohol. I struggled with maintaining consistency and my anger. My anger was my biggest struggle; I was so used to living in a state of hyperawareness… I had no idea who I was if that just went away.
