Hi Arica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in the medical field for about nine years now, working as a full-time medical assistant. However, I felt the urge to create something for myself and my future family. Despite having no experience in business or entrepreneurship, I set a goal to start my venture.

I’ve wanted to share my mother’s home cooking with others for years but didn’t know where to begin. In the summer of 2023, I founded Yin & Yum. The Grand Rapids Downtown Market-Incubator Kitchen has been incredibly supportive in getting my business off the ground, for which I’m truly grateful.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not at all. Fortunately, I had access to numerous resources that supported me throughout the journey. Overcoming self-doubt was a significant challenge. I faced many questions like, “Do you truly want this? It requires an investment. What if it doesn’t sell? What if it fails?”

Surprisingly, these doubts fueled my motivation. I’ve realized that the most substantial personal growth stems from stepping into uncomfortable situations. While it’s both scary and exciting, I’ve had to cultivate a genuine belief in myself and the success of my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Yin & Yum?
Yin & Yum focuses on Southeast Asian cuisine, specifically Cambodian and Vietnamese dishes. Our team consists of myself, my mother, and my fiancé. What sets us apart is our commitment to providing customers with an authentic culinary experience, introducing them to flavors they may have never encountered before, such as Lemongrass Meat Skewers and Pandan Mochi Waffles.

Our brand’s ability to overcome challenges and grow stronger is particularly impressive. Whether facing setbacks or seizing new opportunities, we’ve consistently demonstrated resilience and adaptability. In addition to our regular menu, Yin & Yum offers catering services for various occasions, including corporate lunches, private dinners, and events.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During the crisis, I believe people realized how important it is to stick together and help each other. Whether it was lending a hand, volunteering, or just being there for friends and family, this sense of togetherness made a big difference.

The pandemic has also made mental health a top priority for many, including myself. More individuals are focusing on caring for their mental well-being and reaching out for help when necessary.
