Hidden Gems: Meet Ana Isabel Cruz of Anita Bakehouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Isabel Cruz.

Hi Ana Isabel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into the world of baking has always been driven by a deep passion for creating things with my own hands. It actually began back in Cuba, where baking was a beloved hobby of mine for a long time. Everything changed when my son was born; I started baking for him as a way to provide healthier, age-appropriate treats from scratch.
When I arrived in the United States, as a mom looking to balance family life while generating income from home, that hobby naturally transformed into my full-time career. Today, I specialize in custom, artisanal baking made entirely from scratch. For me, a cake is the centerpiece of any major life event, and creating it comes with a beautiful responsibility. It’s never just about mixing ingredients; it’s about pouring my heart into the design to bring my clients’ unique stories to life.
Seeing the look of pure joy on my clients’ faces is what drives me. Balancing being a dedicated mother, wife, and small business owner is a beautiful challenge, and making life’s milestones sweeter for the families in our community makes every late night completely worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting completely from scratch with very little capital is a major hurdle for any new business.
Another daily struggle is time management. Balancing the roles of being a dedicated mother, a wife, and an entrepreneur working from home is a constant juggling act. In custom baking, it requires many late nights of meticulous, focused work to ensure every single detail is perfect for a client’s celebration.
However, every obstacle has been a powerful learning experience. Overcoming these financial and time constraints has not only made me a stronger professional but has also taught me that every single day and every challenge we face gently guides us on the path to achieving our dreams.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Anita Bakehouse, I specialize in custom, artisanal baking made entirely from scratch. I am known for creating beautiful custom cakes tailored to my clients’ unique visions, balancing sweet designs with authentic, delicious flavors. I offer a menu that features both classic cake flavors and unique Caribbean inspirations.
What sets me apart is the genuine connection I build with my clients. I take the time to understand the story behind each celebration, treating the cake as the true centerpiece it is.
I am most proud of the trust our community places in my hands. I want readers to know that when they order from Anita Bakehouse, they are receiving a dedicated, homemade creation crafted with love, passion, and care down to the very last detail.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a bit of a shy girl, but I had a huge imagination. I spent hours drawing, designing wedding dresses, lol, dressing up as a princess, and dancing with my school’s art group during my elementary years. As I grew older, I drifted away from the arts and studied Accounting and Finance, commercial techniques, etc, but that inner creative spark never truly left me.
My connection to baking started during my teenage years when the grandmother of one of my friends taught me my very first dessert recipe. However, it wasn’t until I became a mother that everything came full circle, and I officially entered this world as a hobby.
That is why I love baking custom cakes so much today. Whenever I get to create a princess cake, it completely takes me back to my childhood, making the little girl inside of me incredibly happy. Looking back, I love seeing how that shy little girl eventually found her true calling in baking.
