Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Low.
Hi Alyssa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a creative person and someone who’s been drawn to making things with my hands. I was inspired at a young age from my mom who was a graphic designer and artist. She had a home studio where I was able to paint, draw, and learn basic graphic design skills. Being exposed to design and art lead me to making a career out of it. I’ve worked at various design agencies and organizations within Chicago and remotely. But being a muralist didn’t start until the pandemic. Like many people, I was looking for a creative outlet while isolating and social distancing. A friend of mine invited me to paint a small mural with her, and that organically lead to more projects and collaborations over the last few years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I never expected my mural practice to evolve in the way it has. When starting out I made some boundaries for myself (that I still hold today)— if it feels right, go for it. If I have to force myself to get inspired, then I should pause or step back. Every project is an opportunity to learn and grow. There have definitely been some challenges along the way — like learning how to grow a business, creatively having a style yet pushing new boundaries. One of the biggest challenges was when I decided to go off on my own to be an independent muralist and designer. It was shifting my mindset that “safety and security” doesn’t have to be traditionally the way I perceived it. That I can create a new way of doing it, while still being creative.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an artist, muralist, and designer from Chicago. My artwork explores the connection between colors, shapes, and composition. My style weaves in minimalistic shapes, bold colors, and patterns that create a modular narrative filled with mementos and iconography. My design work spans the spectrum of branding, digital, and UX.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Cristina Vanko for introducing me to painting murals. I painted my first one with her! AND an amazing artist and designer. Check out her work @cristinavanko
Kate Lewis has been such a wonderful mentor to me for all things business, murals, process, etc. She’s super honest and transparent on her practice. I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it wasn’t for her perspective and willingness, and generosity. ALSO immensely talented. Check out her work @kate.lynn.lewis
