Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Boettger.
Hi Adam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Adam and I’m the founder of Sacred Sojourn, an international events company that creates and hosts transformational experiences around the world.
My love of retreats found me in a very unexpected way. At the time, I was running a videography business and primarily filming weddings when I was invited to capture a retreat project. I had never attended one before, so it was a completely new setting for me. While I was hired to observe and film, I couldn’t help but be moved by the beauty and transformation unfolding on the other side of my lens. The change I witnessed left a significant imprint on me. I was immediately hooked and left that weekend knowing in my heart that I would do this someday.
It was also around this time that I began practicing and studying yoga. A year later, I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training at Good Karma Yoga Studio and also received an additional certification in Yin Yoga with Bethany Perry. I began filming and participating in more retreats, and I also had the opportunity to live at a retreat center in Guatemala. I was then invited to spend a month living in the Amazon rainforest, where I was blessed to work alongside indigenous shamans and participate in traditional plant medicine ceremonies.
Upon returning home, I made the bold decision to hang up my camera and close my videography business. In 2018, I put my skills, experience, and intuition to the test when I began working on my first retreat, which later took place in Hawai’i. Nine people attended, and together we shared a deeply meaningful journey. That experience inspired me to plan more events and ultimately led to the founding of my second company, which would become Sacred Sojourn.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While there have been many blessings and celebrations along the way, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride. I’ve had to cancel events due to low sign-ups or the global pandemic, which forced me to shut down for almost two years. I’ve had a guest who had to be medically evacuated. I even lost money on a retreat once because of recruitment challenges and unforeseen budget changes.
Through it all, there have been hiccups, mistakes, and valuable lessons to learn along the way. Building a business is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience and fierce determination to see your vision through. There have been moments when I could’ve walked away to pursue something more stable — but none of that felt right. I chose to keep this vision close to my heart and build it, brick by brick.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
These retreats offer a blend of experiences, welcoming people of all ages, bodies, and backgrounds. We enjoy meals together, practice yoga, meditate, journal, and have the option to share our thoughts and feelings in reflection circles. We also enjoy incredible excursions, which vary by location — from going on safari and spa nights atop a mountain under a starry sky to summiting Machu Picchu and zip-lining through the jungle. I often remind guests (and myself) that growth often lies just beyond the edges of comfort.
Every retreat inspires new possibilities and can be completely different from the next. That’s part of what I love most about them. I have so many ideas for different styles and formats that I hope to bring to life over the years. I’m always dreaming up new ways to create experiences that are fresh, meaningful, and transformative for my clients. I’m immensely proud that Sacred Sojourn has received over 100 five-star reviews on Google, and 94% of guests say they would love to return for another retreat — and often do! I’m deeply honored to know that this work has touched the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of people across the globe.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
What instantly comes to mind are the experiences I was lucky to have each year at Lions Bear Lake Camp, a program designed for children who are hard of hearing. I should mention that I’ve been deaf in both ears since I was five and have had a cochlear implant ever since, which has radically changed my life.
At camp, our days were filled with swimming, hiking, paddle-boating, and exploring. We learned to identify plants, insects, birds, and animals. We also took part in silly contests for the tidiest cabin and fun activities like hosting a fashion show, where we dressed our counselors in hilarious costumes and rehearsed a grand play to perform for our parents at the end of the week.
As a kid, this safe, playful, and loving environment meant everything to me. Many of us were struggling with our hearing — how to process and understand it, how to cope, and ultimately how to navigate the hearing world around us. That week each summer was a true gift, and I’ll always be grateful for it.
