Exploring Life & Business with Yaseen Ghannam of Ya Man Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yaseen Ghannam

Hi Yaseen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From a humble upbringing with six siblings in Jordan, my journey into the world of barbering began with a twist of fate. Initially drawn to the mechanics of cars, it was my uncle who saw a different path for me. With his support, I embarked on a new career in barbering, a decision that would shape my destiny.

In September 1999, I enrolled at the prestigious French Academy in Jordan to pursue my passion for barbering. Over the years, I honed my skills in four distinct barbershops, each contributing to my unique style and fostering my ambition to one day own my own establishment.

In 2010, I made the life-changing move to the United States, joining family who had settled here decades earlier. Adjusting to a new country posed challenges, and I found myself initially working odd jobs, including at my uncle’s liquor store in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Yet, within these challenges lay the seeds of entrepreneurship.

While juggling employment at Meijer and in construction, I pursued my dream of becoming a licensed barber, a journey riddled with obstacles. It was during a moment of reflection, scrubbing bathrooms at Meijer, that I questioned my purpose in America. A chance encounter with a fellow immigrant reignited my passion for barbering and provided the crucial assistance I needed to overcome language barriers and pass my state board test.

In 2012, with unwavering determination, I launched Yaseen Barbershop, a modest 10ft by 10ft space equipped with just two chairs. Over the years, my business flourished, prompting a move to a larger location in 2015. In 2020, I relocated to Ya Man Barbershop in Cascade, MI. This location stands as a testament to perseverance, boasting a loyal clientele of over 5000 and a team of six skilled barbers.

Amidst the growth of my barbershops, I found myself drawn to the world of retail, envisioning my own line of beard oils and balms. This expansion reflects my commitment to diversifying income streams and creating a lasting legacy for my family.

Looking ahead, my vision extends beyond the confines of my barbershops. I aspire to open Ya Man Barber Academy, where I can impart the artistry and techniques of Jordanian barbering to aspiring professionals in the United States. Through the academy, I aim to preserve and share the rich tradition of Jordanian barbering, introducing the “Jordan-Way” to a new generation of barbers and enthusiasts alike.

As I continue to navigate the intricate tapestry of entrepreneurship, I am driven by a singular goal: to inspire others with my journey and leave behind a legacy of determination, resilience, and success.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the path from a modest upbringing in Jordan to entrepreneurial success in the United States was fraught with numerous obstacles and challenges. Initially, the language barrier posed a significant hurdle, hindering communication and understanding as I pursued my dream of becoming a licensed barber. The arduous process of obtaining my barber license, compounded by the difficulty of comprehending the state board test in English, tested my perseverance and resolve. Financial constraints added another layer of complexity, forcing me to work multiple jobs, including cleaning bathrooms and laboring in construction, to make ends meet. Moreover, establishing myself in a new country meant starting from scratch, with limited resources and a sparse network of contacts. Yet, it was through these challenges that I discovered resilience and determination, propelling me forward on the path to realizing my entrepreneurial aspirations.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
