Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Green Dobbs.
Hi Toni, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Detroit Player Golf was created from both passion and purpose. The brand was inspired by my late father and one of my close friends who both loved the game of golf and left a lasting impact on my life. After losing them, I wanted to create something meaningful that honored their legacy while also bringing people together through style, culture, and the game they loved so much.
What started as a way to keep their memory alive slowly grew into a brand focused on inclusivity, confidence, and redefining what golf apparel can look like. I noticed there weren’t many brands that truly blended fashionable, functional golf wear with representation for diverse communities and women golfers. That inspired me to create apparel that feels stylish on and off the course while still performing for the game.
From our signature 2-n-1 golf shirts with removable sleeves to athleisure-inspired collections, Detroit Player Golf is built around versatility, comfort, and confidence. Every design is personal to me because the brand itself is rooted in love, loss, resilience, and legacy.
Building the company hasn’t always been easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty, but I’ve continued pushing forward because the mission means so much to me. Seeing people proudly wear the brand and connect with the story behind it reminds me why I started. Detroit Player Golf is more than apparel — it’s a tribute to the people who inspired me and a brand that encourages everyone to feel like they belong in the game.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges financially, emotionally, and mentally while building Detroit Player Golf. Starting a brand from the ground up takes a lot of sacrifice, patience, and faith — especially when you’re trying to balance creativity, business operations, marketing, inventory, and everyday life all at once.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a brand while also carrying the emotional weight behind why it was created. Since Detroit Player Golf was inspired by the loss of my father and close friend, there have been moments where grief and business collided. At times, it was difficult to stay motivated, but remembering the purpose behind the brand always pushed me forward.
Another challenge has been breaking into the golf apparel space as an independent brand focused on diversity and inclusivity. There were moments where I questioned whether people would understand the vision, but over time I’ve learned that staying authentic is what truly makes the brand stand out.
I’ve also learned that entrepreneurship requires resilience. There are highs and lows, delayed opportunities, setbacks, and moments where you have to figure things out on your own. But every obstacle has taught me something valuable and helped shape both me and the brand into what we are today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Detroit Player Golf?
Detroit Player Golf is a golf apparel and lifestyle brand focused on redefining what the game looks and feels like by blending style, comfort, and inclusivity. The brand was created to bring a fresh perspective to golf fashion — offering pieces that are functional on the course but versatile enough to be worn beyond it, from everyday life to social settings.
We specialize in modern golf apparel with a fashion-forward edge, including our signature 2-n-1 golf shirts with removable sleeves, performance tops, hats, and lifestyle pieces designed to transition seamlessly from sport to streetwear. Each collection is built with the idea that golf should feel accessible, expressive, and welcoming to everyone — not limited by tradition or exclusivity.
What sets Detroit Player Golf apart is the story and purpose behind it. The brand is rooted in legacy, inspired by my late father and close friend who both shared a love for golf. That personal foundation drives everything from the design process to the mission of the brand. It’s not just about clothing — it’s about honoring their memory while creating something that represents confidence, resilience, and individuality.
I’m most proud of how the brand resonates with people on a deeper level. Seeing customers wear Detroit Player Golf and connect with its meaning — especially women and diverse golfers who feel seen in this space — is incredibly rewarding. It confirms that the vision is bigger than apparel; it’s about representation and belonging in a sport that is continuing to evolve.
What I want readers to know is that Detroit Player Golf is more than a clothing line. It’s a lifestyle brand built on legacy, creativity, and purpose. Every piece is designed to inspire confidence and remind people that they belong on the course, in the clubhouse, and everywhere in between.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Yes — I draw inspiration and guidance from a mix of books, podcasts, and content that focus on entrepreneurship, mindset, and building something meaningful from the ground up.
Some of the books that have impacted me the most are The Lean Startup by Eric Ries and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Both remind me of the importance of resilience, testing ideas, and staying focused on the bigger vision even when things don’t go as planned.
I also enjoy listening to podcasts like How I Built This by Guy Raz and The Tim Ferriss Show. Hearing real stories of entrepreneurs who faced setbacks, pivoted, and still built successful brands helps me stay grounded and motivated in my own journey. It’s reassuring to know that most success stories come with a lot of trial, error, and persistence.
Outside of that, I try to stay inspired by everyday life — conversations with other entrepreneurs, customer feedback, and even challenges I face while building Detroit Player Golf. I’ve learned that growth doesn’t just come from formal resources, but also from experience and staying open to learning in real time.
All of these influences help me stay focused on building a brand that is intentional, purpose-driven, and rooted in legacy while continuing to grow and evolve.
