Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamarra Campbell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was in high-school I was very involved with marching band, theater and anything creative. I had the best group of teachers that pushed me to stay in the arts and helped get me into film school. From there I was very active in Grand Rapids shooting shorts films and music videos. I launch a concert summer series called Jammin GR supporting local musicians. We would take photo and video for them during hosted events. I began working as a intern for a production company and it was hard work. I had three jobs at the time. My sophomore year I was asked to work on a full feature, I left film school took a risk and started freelancing full time. During this time I worked on Say Yes To The Dress, 90 Day Fiancé, city of Grand Rapids content, Wolverine branding commercials, local nonprofits sizzles and more. At my peak I was traveling to the major city’s working with top producers and networks. Through connects I began working on a documentary called Head to Head, that changed my life how I wanted to tell stories. I shifted in unscripted work and became a founder. My business supports nonprofit organizations and filmmakers with the focus on art and culture. I am able to support dynamic and diverse stories that really mean something. Since my launch of my business I have supported 36 nonprofits, over 60 community, raised 500k in funding and worked as a Impact Producer for over 5 documentaries.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Gurl no! Nothing has been handed to me. Being a unapologetic black, queer women has its challenges. I have worked for mainly white men and people that have not always believed in me. I remember one winter crying on the couch with my husband as we had only $2 in our bank account. I took the leap of faith to be a full time freelancer and that showed. I have received soooo many no’s in my life. I have pitched to clients on projects I fully believed in to be rejected. Old partners and friends turned there back on me. I experienced medical problems just from the stress and anxiety of the pressures working for success. Every single day is a challenge for me. I have never been like, wow that was easy.
