Today we’d like to introduce you to Shacara Burrel
Hi Shacara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The journey of Becoming Balanced, LLC began with my deep-rooted passion for mental health and holistic wellness, shaped by my background in law and social work. I had always been driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives, particularly in fostering environments where individuals and families could find healing, growth, and resilience.
As a young single mom at the age of 19, I had to learn how to navigate resources efficiently. I started working at a local drug store at the age of 14 and continued until I left Muskegon, MI, at 24. During this time, I balanced work, school, and taking care of my daughter. I navigated my life with the same determination and ambition as I would have if I weren’t a parent, never stopping my pursuit of education.
Through this experience, I became acutely aware of the gaps in care and cultural competency that existed, especially as a young, single Black mother. I saw firsthand how local rules and laws impacted the way families chose to live, as well as the limitations and challenges posed by the available resources. This journey taught me about the systemic barriers many face and ignited a passion in me to address these issues.
My career started in various challenging roles, including working as a Domestic Violence Staff Attorney and in settings like county jails, alternative schools, and perinatal grief and loss programs. These experiences provided me with a profound understanding of the diverse and complex needs of different communities. I noticed a significant gap in culturally competent mental health services, especially for people of color. This realization ignited a spark in me to create a space where these needs could be addressed more effectively.
With this vision in mind, I pursued further education, earning a dual degree in Law (Juris Doctorate) and Social Work (Master’s of Social Work). I also became certified as a civil mediator. These qualifications equipped me with a unique blend of skills and knowledge, allowing me to approach mental health from a multifaceted perspective.
In 2022, I founded Becoming Balanced, LLC. The name itself reflects the core mission of the practice: to help clients achieve a balanced and harmonious life. Our services include individual therapy, couples therapy, co-parenting conflict resolution, civil mediation, group facilitation, and consultation for individuals and businesses. We aim to provide inclusive and culturally sensitive support, empowering our clients to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.
Through Becoming Balanced, LLC, I strive to create a safe, supportive space for healing and personal growth. Our approach is rooted in compassion, cultural competence, and a deep commitment to the well-being of our community. Each day, I am inspired by the positive transformations I witness in my clients, reaffirming my belief in the importance and impact of the work we do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of establishing and growing Becoming Balanced, LLC has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant hurdles has been gaining credibility and visibility in the Kalamazoo community. As a new business without deep roots in the area, it has taken considerable effort to build a reputation and make our services known.
Another challenge has been financial instability. It has also been a major obstacle. As a new practice, balancing the costs of operations while striving to provide accessible services has been a delicate dance. This financial pressure is exacerbated by the ongoing need to invest in marketing, professional development, and other growth initiatives.
Despite these challenges, I have remained steadfast in my mission. Each obstacle has provided valuable lessons and opportunities for growth, strengthening my resolve to create a practice that truly makes a difference in the lives of our clients and the broader community. Through perseverance and a commitment to our core values, Becoming Balanced, LLC continues to evolve and thrive, serving as a beacon of hope and support for those in need.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Our practice stands out for its commitment to addressing gaps in mental health services, particularly for communities of color. Through partnerships with organizations like the Black Wellness Network, Rootead, and Bronson EAP, and by leveraging platforms such as Psychology Today and our own podcast, “The Balance,” we actively engage with the community to promote mental health awareness and support. Our goal is to create safe, supportive spaces where clients can achieve balance and well-being.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory would be summer camp. Despite hating the bugs and everything that came with the outdoors, I enjoyed riding my bike to the neighborhood summer camp and spending my days there. The highlight was the week-long summer camp trip, where I met amazing friends. It’s hard to choose between the two, so I’d say it’s a tie.
