Exploring Life & Business with Pennapa Wichian of Thai Table

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pennapa Wichian.

Hi Pennapa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I come from Bangkok. As a salaried employee seeking a change in my life, I decided to open a Thai restaurant in Grand Rapids—hoping that my ability to prepare authentic Thai cuisine would transform not only my own life but also the lives of others in this city.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I had never run a restaurant before—not even back in Thailand—and my English skills were quite poor. Consequently, even navigating daily life was a struggle. Furthermore, opening a restaurant requires a significant investment of both capital and effort. I devoted all my time to the process—including handling the extensive paperwork—and it took over two years before I was finally able to open the doors. Since then, every single day has been a struggle.

As you know, we’re big fans of Thai Table. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Thai Table is more than just a restaurant; it is a culinary bridge between the vibrant streets of Bangkok and the heart of Grand Rapids. Founded by owners who moved directly from Thailand’s capital, our mission is to preserve and share the true soul of Thai gastronomy. We believe that food is a universal language, and we serve it with the same warmth and hospitality you would find in a traditional Thai home

We specialize in uncompromisingly authentic Thai cuisine. While many adapt Thai flavors to local palates, we stay true to our roots by using traditional ingredients like holy basil and house-made tamarind-based sauces. We are best known for our “Real” Pad Thai and Pad Kra Pao, as well as our legendary Thai Boat Noodles—the “King of Thai Noodles”—which features a rich, aromatic broth simmered for hours with premium Thai herbs.

What truly sets us apart is our dedication to heritage. We don’t take shortcuts. From our hand-picked spices to the historical origins of our recipes, every dish tells a story. Our deep connection to the source—Bangkok—ensures that our flavors remain vibrant, complex, and honest, providing an experience that is as educational as it is delicious.

We are most proud of the trust and loyalty we have built within the Grand Rapids community. Our customers recognize Thai Table as a gold standard for authenticity. We are also proud of our growth and our vision to expand this authentic fast-food concept across the country, proving that real, high-quality Thai food can be both accessible and soul-satisfying.

We want everyone to know that at Thai Table, you aren’t just a customer; you are a guest in our kitchen. Whether you dine with us at our Wealthy location or order directly through our website, you are supporting a business that values tradition over trends. We invite you to discover the bold, symphonic flavors of Thailand—the way they were meant to be tasted. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just food, it’s memories.

How do you think about luck?
In the journey of building Thai Table, I believe “luck” has manifested most profoundly through the incredible people who have entered our lives. While we worked hard to bring the authentic flavors of Bangkok to Grand Rapids, we feel exceptionally lucky to have found a community that embraced us so warmly.

For us, luck isn’t just a random occurrence; it’s the series of “good people” we’ve encountered along the way. We’ve been fortunate to have:

Our Loyal Customers: We feel lucky every day for the guests who didn’t just come for a meal but stayed for the story, eventually becoming more like a large extended family than just patrons.

Our Partners and Staff: We are incredibly lucky to work alongside partners and a dedicated team who share our passion for authenticity. They have been instrumental in our growth, turning professional collaborations into deep, familial bonds.

Community Support: Moving from Thailand to Michigan was a monumental leap, and the luck of finding supportive local mentors and neighbors has made our expansion goals feel possible.

In our business, we’ve learned that while you can’t control every circumstance, being surrounded by the right people transforms even the “bad luck” into manageable challenges. At the end of the day, we are most grateful for the luck of these relationships because, at Thai Table, it’s not just food, it’s memories.
